{"id":45888,"date":"2012-04-13T11:50:39","date_gmt":"2012-04-13T16:50:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=45888"},"modified":"2013-11-08T04:38:23","modified_gmt":"2013-11-08T09:38:23","slug":"mocking-feminism-in-a-smirnoff-ad","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2012\/04\/13\/mocking-feminism-in-a-smirnoff-ad\/","title":{"rendered":"Mocking Feminism in a Smirnoff Ad"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In a collection of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.retronaut.co\/2012\/04\/men-in-alcohol-ads-c-1960s-1970s\/\" target=\"_blank\">alcohol ads from the 1960s and &#8217;70s<\/a>, Retronaut included an ad that is a nice example of how marketers sometimes co-opt social movements. \u00a0In this case, the co-optation works against the movement, sending the opposite message that it intended.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I never even thought of burning my bra until I discovered Smirnoff,&#8221; says a woman with bedroom eyes. \u00a0 The message, of course, is not that a woman who drinks the vodka will become politicized; instead, it is that Smirnoff will &#8220;loosen her up&#8221; and facilitate seduction.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/04\/11.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-45889\" title=\"\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/04\/11.png\" width=\"415\" height=\"585\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/04\/11.png 519w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/04\/11-500x704.png 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 415px) 100vw, 415px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ve posted other examples of this phenomenon, including a <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/05\/11\/appropriation-of-social-movements-in-playboy\/\">series of Playboy illustrations<\/a> that co-opted the feminist movement (&#8220;Male supremacy is all right &#8212; but I favor a different position&#8221;) as well as the Civil Rights and Anti-War movements. \u00a0We&#8217;ve also collected instances of <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/02\/27\/commodifying-the-womens-movement\/\">feminist rhetoric being used to market a wide range of products<\/a>\u00a0and, of course, there&#8217;s always the remarkable\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2012\/02\/27\/torches-of-freedom-women-and-smoking-propaganda\/\">&#8220;torches of freedom&#8221; pro-smoking campaigns<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The bra-burning story, incidentally, is a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.snopes.com\/history\/american\/burnbra.asp\" target=\"_blank\">myth<\/a>. \u00a0In 1968 feminists protested outside of the Miss America pageant; they threw many items deemed oppressive into a trash can: bras, yes, as well as cosmetics, high heels, etc. \u00a0They didn&#8217;t light the trash can on fire. \u00a0The idea that they burned bras was added later, in an effort to link the Women&#8217;s Movement to the Anti-War Movement (remember that draftees were burning their draft cards). \u00a0The Anti-War Movement was, at the time, being taken more seriously, so the link was meant to give feminism more credibility. \u00a0Instead, the idea of feminists burning bras became a humorous cultural trope, hence the ad above.<\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
