{"id":45472,"date":"2012-03-23T12:30:14","date_gmt":"2012-03-23T17:30:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=45472"},"modified":"2013-11-08T04:43:54","modified_gmt":"2013-11-08T09:43:54","slug":"gender-ideology-in-size-charts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2012\/03\/23\/gender-ideology-in-size-charts\/","title":{"rendered":"Gender Ideology in Size Charts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In 2010 we wrote about how gender ideology inflects even the most &#8220;objective&#8221; of spheres. \u00a0In this case, we featured four <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2010\/03\/14\/gender-and-anatomy\/\">examples of anatomical illustration<\/a>, portrayals of human beings used to educate viewers about biology. \u00a0In each case, while the man faced forward with his weight evenly distributed on his two feet, the woman placed her hand on her hip, cocked a knee, or even turned slightly sideways. \u00a0In other words, he was posed in a masculine way and she in a feminine way.<\/p>\n<p>When we see this kind of gendered posing in drawings that are ostensibly neutral, we are being told that our particular historically- and culturally-contingent version of masculinity and femininity is <em>natural<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>In this vein, Courtney S. sent in a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.designbyhumans.com\/sizechart\/\" target=\"_blank\">Design by H\u00fcmans Size Chart<\/a>. \u00a0The chart is supposed to help buyers decide what size to purchase, but the accompanying images do more than just illustrate how measurements are made; by torquing the female torso, they send a message about gender too:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/03\/15.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-45479\" title=\"\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/03\/15.png\" width=\"537\" height=\"432\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/03\/15.png 746w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/03\/15-500x402.png 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 537px) 100vw, 537px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
