Privilege and Mom Blogging"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Paula F. sent in a link to Babble.com\u2019s list of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.babble.com\/mom\/work-family\/top-mom-bloggers\/\" target=\"_blank\">top 100 \u2018mom blogs\u2019 of 2011<\/a>.\u00a0 Mom blogs have become wildly popular in recent years as a way to document and comment on the experience of motherhood, and this particular list illustrates some interesting things about social privilege.\u00a0 Paula was struck by the lack of racial diversity among the selected blogs and noted how women of color are vastly underrepresented.\u00a0\u00a0 For example, only 7 of the blogs are written by African-American moms, and 4 of those refer to the mother\u2019s race in the title (although the same is not true for any of the blogs written by white women).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/02\/6.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-45081\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/02\/6.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"446\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-45080\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/02\/5.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"449\" height=\"93\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A quick review of the blogs reveals some other interesting issues related to social privilege and motherhood.\u00a0 In addition to the lack of racial diversity, the blogs included in the list show very little variation in terms of class, sexuality, age, and marital status.\u00a0\u00a0 (The blogs were chosen by a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.babble.com\/mom\/work-family\/top-mom-bloggers-panelists\" target=\"_blank\">panel\u00a0of \u201cexperts\u201d<\/a> that took into consideration nominations from Babble readers, so it\u2019s unclear how representative they are of mom blogs in general.)<\/p>\n<p>While there is the more obvious privilege of the \u201cdigital divide,\u201d or the disparate access that people have to technology and the internet, there is also <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/02\/27\/magazine\/27armstrong-t.html?_r=1&amp;pagewanted=all\" target=\"_blank\">privilege in having the spare time<\/a> to devote to intensive writing\/blogging and the connections necessarily to draw sponsorship and advertising.\u00a0 Moreover, while some of the selected blogs do offer narratives that deviate from traditional ideas about mothering and motherhood (for example, several blogs discuss mental health issues, the struggles of parenting, and forming blended families), they nonetheless reproduce a narrow image of who mothers are, what they look like, and what they do.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;<\/p>\n<p>Christie Barcelos is a doctoral student, a mom, and a
