{"id":44995,"date":"2013-02-13T12:34:07","date_gmt":"2013-02-13T17:34:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=44995"},"modified":"2014-02-10T14:58:46","modified_gmt":"2014-02-10T19:58:46","slug":"my-cheap-scottish-valentine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2013\/02\/13\/my-cheap-scottish-valentine\/","title":{"rendered":"My Cheap Scottish Valentine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On previous Valentine&#8217;s Days, we&#8217;ve featured vintage holiday cards caricaturing <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2011\/02\/14\/racist-vintage-valentines-day-cards-africans-and-african-americans\/\">African Americans<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2011\/02\/14\/more-vintage-valentine-cards-with-racial-caricatures\/\">Asian Americans<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2011\/02\/12\/vintage-valentines-punning-on-american-indians\/\">American Indians<\/a>. \u00a0This year I stumbled upon a card that draws upon stereotypes of the Scottish.<\/p>\n<p>Though it has largely disappeared as a well-known stereotype, at one time in American\/British history, <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/07\/04\/stereotyping-scots-as-cheap\/\">the Scottish were stereotyped as cheap<\/a>. \u00a0Accordingly, this 1932 Scotch-themed valentine boasts that it&#8217;s box of dates (a type of dried fruit) can last all year if &#8220;ye use them sparingly.&#8221; A great example of a bygone stereotype (I think):<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/02\/112.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-44996\" title=\"\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/02\/112.png\" width=\"507\" height=\"452\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/02\/112.png 507w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/02\/112-500x445.png 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 507px) 100vw, 507px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Valentine found at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitsch-slapped.com\/2011\/02\/be-my-racist-valentine\/\" target=\"_blank\">Kitsch Slapped<\/a>.<\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
