{"id":44199,"date":"2012-01-23T12:01:33","date_gmt":"2012-01-23T17:01:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=44199"},"modified":"2013-11-08T05:06:20","modified_gmt":"2013-11-08T10:06:20","slug":"the-impact-of-the-sopapipa-blackout","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2012\/01\/23\/the-impact-of-the-sopapipa-blackout\/","title":{"rendered":"The Impact of the SOPA\/PIPA BlackOut"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On January 18th, 2012 many sites on the internet went &#8220;black&#8221; to protest the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and the Protect Intellectual Property Act (PIPA), including\u00a0Wikipedia, Boing Boing, Reddit, Cheezburger, Craig&#8217;s List, WordPress, Wired,\u00a0and Sociological Images too, to name a few (in solidarity, Google blacked out it&#8217;s logo). \u00a0While written ostensibly to make it easier to stop pirating of music, movies, and other media, opponents argue that the Acts are so penalizing and over-reaching that they would\u00a0essentially criminalize sharing and creativity. \u00a0There&#8217;s a great <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/business\/internet-protest-gallery,0,5151277.photogallery\" target=\"_blank\">slideshow of the blacked out sites<\/a> at the <em>Los Angeles Times<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The next day proved that this online action made a large difference, at least in the short run. Seventy Congress members switched their positions or newly decided to stand against the Acts (<a href=\"http:\/\/boingboing.net\/2012\/01\/19\/how-the-internet-blackout-affe.html\" target=\"_blank\">Boing Boing<\/a>). Congress has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pcmag.com\/article2\/0,2817,2399132,00.asp\" target=\"_blank\">postponed actions on the Act<\/a>, which was slotted for today.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/01\/16.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-44200\" title=\"\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/01\/16-500x625.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"625\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/01\/16-500x625.jpg 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/01\/16.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>From the point of view of Sociological Images, this is a much needed victory.
