Let\u2019s just stipulate that using a personal electronic device while driving increases the risk of an accident and should be avoided.<\/p>\n

Let me just make sure I have the rest of the facts straight.<\/p>\n

1. \u00a0The total number of traffic deaths is at its\u00a0lowest level since 1949<\/a>, even as the population, number of vehicles, and number of miles driven have all increased radically.<\/p>\n

2. \u00a0The number of mobile phone subscribers has\u00a0increased more than 1,000%<\/a> since the early 1990s.<\/p>\n

3. \u00a0\u201cDistraction-affected\u201d crashes<\/a> accounted for less than 10% of traffic fatalities in 2010.<\/p>\n

4. \u00a0Deaths attributed to drivers age 17 and younger have\u00a0fallen by about half since 1990<\/a>.<\/p>\n

5. \u00a0The National Transportation Safety Board “is recommending that states prohibit all drivers from using cellphones, for talking or texting<\/a>.”<\/p>\n
