{"id":4280,"date":"2008-11-20T01:02:25","date_gmt":"2008-11-20T06:02:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=4280"},"modified":"2010-11-24T02:56:17","modified_gmt":"2010-11-24T07:56:17","slug":"replacing-women","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/11\/20\/replacing-women\/","title":{"rendered":"Replacing Women"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Vintage Ads posted these three ads&#8211;one for an <a href=\"http:\/\/community.livejournal.com\/vintage_ads\/1069570.html\" target=\"_blank\">electric refrigerator<\/a> and two for <a href=\"http:\/\/community.livejournal.com\/vintage_ads\/1069563.html\" target=\"_blank\">Gold Dust Cleaner<\/a>&#8211;that compare the product to a Black servant.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The copy in the refrigerator ad reads: &#8220;And So Electricity Is Made The Willing Servant.&#8221;\u00a0 The accompanying image includes three white women looking leisurely and a Black servant.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2008\/11\/snob_appeal_02.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4279\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2008\/11\/snob_appeal_02.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"274\" height=\"252\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Similarly, these two Gold Dust ads personify the product as Black twin babies. The motto is: &#8220;Let the GOLD DUST TWINS do your work.&#8221;<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2008\/11\/34068.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-4277\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2008\/11\/34068-117x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"196\" height=\"479\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2008\/11\/golddust03nm.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-2\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-4278\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2008\/11\/golddust03nm-221x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"389\" height=\"479\" \/><\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I think these are fascinating in that they draw our attention to whose work technology is designed to replace.
