{"id":42638,"date":"2011-12-06T12:34:13","date_gmt":"2011-12-06T17:34:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=42638"},"modified":"2013-11-09T04:59:50","modified_gmt":"2013-11-09T09:59:50","slug":"on-camping-and-the-framing-of-occupy-movement-strategies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2011\/12\/06\/on-camping-and-the-framing-of-occupy-movement-strategies\/","title":{"rendered":"On &#8220;Camping&#8221; and the Framing of Occupy Movement Strategies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>To be effective, every social movement has to ensure that the language used to describe it sends the message it wants to send and resonates with a large audience. \u00a0The Occupy Movement&#8217;s popularization of the phrase &#8220;We are the 99%&#8221; is an excellent example of this. \u00a0It is a simple, inclusive phrase that brings to mind the wealth gap. \u00a0It has certainly resonated and it has <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2011\/10\/21\/is-occupy-wall-street-changing-the-discourse\/\">changed the overall discourse<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Keeping atop of the language, though, is always an ongoing battle. \u00a0This <a href=\"http:\/\/boingboing.net\/2011\/11\/29\/venn-diagram-using-a-tent-i.html\" target=\"_blank\">flyer<\/a>, put up by members of Occupy Phoenix, is a great example of a conscious effort to get control of the discourse. \u00a0It targets the word &#8220;camping,&#8221; suggesting that what they are doing is not accurately described by the term:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/12\/11.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-42642 aligncenter\" title=\"\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/12\/11.jpg\" width=\"325\" height=\"404\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Using a tent,&#8221; they claim, is not the same as camping. \u00a0Camping is fun, filled with leisure activities. \u00a0They, in contrast, are doing hard work, &#8220;petitioning the government for redress of grievances.&#8221; \u00a0I hadn&#8217;t thought of it before I saw the flyer, but they are absolutely right that the word &#8220;camping&#8221; threatens their cause. \u00a0What a wonderful example of the power of language and the need to carefully control it.<\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
