Here she is with four (Japanese?) women that she hires to be her Harajuku Girls (found <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mimifroufrou.com\/scentedsalamander\/2008\/04\/gwen_stefani_harajuku_lovers_g.html\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gwenstefani.com\/discography\/detail.aspx?pid=74\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>):<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2008\/11\/picture21.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-4\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4249\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2008\/11\/picture21.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"402\" height=\"302\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2008\/11\/gwenstefaniharajukugirlsredcarpe-1.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-5\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4248\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2008\/11\/gwenstefaniharajukugirlsredcarpe-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2008\/11\/d41e0544-4fef-4e52-b5bf-7407aabfa5d7.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-6\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the comments, Inky points out that Stefani says this about them in her song, Rich Girl:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I\u2019d get me four Harajuku girls to<br \/>\nInspire me and they\u2019d come to my rescue<br \/>\nI\u2019d dress them wicked, I\u2019d give them names<br \/>\nLove, Angel, Music, Baby<br \/>\nHurry up and come and save me<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Stefani also has a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.harajukulovers.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Harajuku Lovers clothing line<\/a> and a series of perfumes, one for her, and one for each Harajuku Girl:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2008\/11\/picture31.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-7\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4250\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2008\/11\/picture31.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"292\" height=\"384\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I think that Stefani&#8217;s use of Asian women as props (they may or may not be Japanese) fetishizes Asian women and reinforces white privilege.\u00a0 The Harajuku Girls serve as contrast to Stefani&#8217;s performance of\u00a0ideal white femininity.\u00a0 It makes me think of both <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/06\/12\/colonial-era-travel-poster\/\" target=\"_self\">this poster on colonial-era travel<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/07\/04\/african-people-as-props-for-white-femininity\/\" target=\"_self\">this fashion spread<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Yet, Stefani&#8217;s been at this for four years and I can&#8217;t remember hearing any objections to her Harajuku Girls, even in feminist and anti-racist alternative media.\u00a0 Further, if her fashion line, perfume, and continued employment of the Harajuku\u00a0Girls\u00a0are any indication, people seem to think the whole thing is awesome.\u00a0 In the meantime, I bet she&#8217;s making bank on her clothing line and perfume.\u00a0 Where&#8217;s that money going?<\/p>\n<p>Do you think my reading is fair?<\/p>\n<p>And, if so, why do you think there&#8217;s been so little outcry?<\/p>\n<p>For good measure, here she is performing with her &#8220;Girls&#8221;:<\/p>\n<p><object width=\"425\" height=\"344\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/ioRIo1EJN4w&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><\/object><\/p>\n<p>In our comments, SG asks that we include the following clarification:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>This article is really misrepresenting  a whole fashion scene and I would like to ask that you correct it- It is just  perpetuating the idiocy and ignorance surrounding these styles. &#8220;Harajuku is a  style for teenagers in a region of Japan&#8221;. &#8220;Harajuku style&#8221; Is a term coined by  western media because they are too ignorant to actually research the names of  these actual styles. Harajuku is not a style. It is a location. The females you  have pictured are in Decora (and two in Visual Kei).
