\u00a0Pubic hair is gross and that&#8217;s how you know wearing animal fur is gross? \u00a0Shave your public hair as a token of your objection to wearing fur? \u00a0Skin yourself, not animals?<\/p>\n<p>Or perhaps my problem is looking for a logic in the first place.<\/p>\n<p><strong>UPDATE 1: <\/strong>A reader sent in a clarification regarding the relationship between PETA and the Ministry of Waxing, one with its own sociological lessons about social movement organizations. \u00a0It appears that the Ministry has donated money to PETA for the privilege of using the &#8220;PETA Business Friend logo.&#8221; \u00a0While PETA has apparently made a deal with the Ministry of Waxing, they legally disclaim any responsibility for how their logo is used and it&#8217;s possible that they did not approve this ad. \u00a0Details on the program <a href=\"http:\/\/www.peta.org\/donate\/ways-to-support-peta\/about-PETA-business-friends.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>UPDATE 2: <\/strong>Another reader, though, argues that the logo on the ad isn&#8217;t the &#8220;Business Friend&#8221; logo (see below), but the &#8220;real&#8221; PETA logo. \u00a0He links to <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.peta.org.uk\/2011\/10\/animals-benefit-when-you-lose-the-fur\/\" target=\"_blank\">a page on the PETA website where they endorse the program<\/a>. \u00a0This reader writes:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8230;PETA isn&#8217;t somehow being used against their\u00a0knowledge; they&#8217;re co-promoting it. \u00a0There&#8217;s no disclaimer, no\u00a0weaseling out, no &#8220;we didn&#8217;t know about it&#8221;; this is 100%\u00a0PETA-approved.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/11\/133.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-42543\" title=\"\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/11\/133.png\" width=\"112\" height=\"88\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Also in PETA:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/06\/14\/peta-women-as-meat-demonstration\/\" target=\"_self\">women packaged like meat<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2010\/07\/20\/metaphorical-merri-go-round-likening-animals-to-women-and-women-to-animals\/\">imagined as meat<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/07\/16\/oh-peta-you-make-my-work-so-easy\/\" target=\"_self\">in cages<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/07\/21\/do-you-love-animals-do-you-have-lady-bits-take-off-your-clothes\/\" target=\"_self\">women who love animals get naked (men wear clothes)<\/a>, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/01\/27\/peta-too-hot-for-the-super-bowl\/\" target=\"_self\">banned superbowl ad<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2007\/09\/20\/the-sexualization-of-activism\/\" target=\"_self\">a collection of various PETA advertising using (mostly women\u2019s) nudity<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>See also our post on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/07\/06\/leftist-balkanization\/\" target=\"_self\">leftist balkanization, or the way that leftist social movements tend to undermine each other<\/a>.<\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
