Front<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The Occupy Movement has clearly transformed conversations about the economy.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2011\/10\/21\/is-occupy-wall-street-changing-the-discourse\/\">It is now inequality &#8212; in particular, the gap between the top 1% and everyone else &#8212; rather than the national debt that dominates the news<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>To review, this gap is real, as the following charts from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.epi.org\/publication\/bp331-occupy-wall-street\/\">Economic Policy Institute<\/a> make clear.\u00a0 This chart shows the percentage increase in household income over the period 1979 to 2007 by income group.\u00a0 While the top 1% enjoyed income gains of 224% over the period, the gains enjoyed by the bottom 90% were far more modest: 5%.\u00a0 Equally striking is the fact that the household income of top 0.01% shot up an astounding 390%.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/media.lclark.edu\/content\/hart-landsberg\/files\/2011\/11\/multnomah.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-4\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><\/a><a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/media.lclark.edu\/content\/hart-landsberg\/files\/2011\/11\/1979.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-5\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><\/a><a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/media.lclark.edu\/content\/hart-landsberg\/files\/2011\/11\/2007.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-6\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><\/a><a title=\"\" height=\"408\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: -webkit-left;\">Unfortunately, there is another income gap that has not received nearly as much attention.\u00a0 It is the white-nonwhite gap.\u00a0 The Portland, Oregon based Coalition of Communities of Color recently published a <a style=\"text-align: -webkit-auto;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.coalitioncommunitiescolor.org\/docs\/AN%20UNSETTLING%20PROFILE.pdf\">report<\/a><span style=\"text-align: -webkit-auto;\"> on the socioeconomic situation of\u00a0people of color in Multnomah Country (which includes Portland). <\/span><\/p>\n<p>As the chart below reveals, the mean income of families of color in the top decile (10%) actually declined by $6,002 over the years 1979 to 2007.\u00a0 By contrast, the mean income of white families in the top 10% \u00a0rose by $122,591.\u00a0 White families and families of color in the bottom half of the distribution all suffered losses.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/media.lclark.edu\/content\/hart-landsberg\/files\/2011\/11\/multnomah.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-4\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/media.lclark.edu\/content\/hart-landsberg\/files\/2011\/11\/multnomah.jpg\"
