Love, Family, and Friendship in U.S. Culture.&#8221; \u00a0If you&#8217;re in Los Angeles, find us at 6:30pm in Johnson Hall, Room 200. \u00a0We&#8217;re gonna talk about how great friends are and what short shrift friendship gets in American culture.\u00a0 <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>UPDATE<\/strong><\/span>: Because of the power outages in Southern California, the talk was rescheduled for\u00a0Tuesday Dec. 6th at 6:00pm (Johnson Hall 200, Occidental College). \u00a0Say &#8220;hello&#8221; if you come by!<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m also looking forward to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/public-speaking\/\" target=\"_blank\">talks<\/a> at Harvard (for Sex Week)\u00a0and the University of\u00a0Massachusetts\u00a0&#8211; Amherst (for a conference on public sociology). \u00a0Both are scheduled for March; I&#8217;ll keep everyone updated and try to arrange a SocImages Meet-Up in Boston.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>New Publications:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong>I&#8217;m proud to report that two academic papers of mine came out this month. \u00a0The first, in <em>Social Problems<\/em>, uses the case of female genital cutting (FGC) to explore the challenges of building multicultural democracies. \u00a0Called &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/lisawadedotcom.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/02\/wade-2011-the-politics-of-acculturation.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">The Politics of Acculturation<\/a>,&#8221; it traces a controversy between anti-FGC activists and physicians who wanted to offer a genital &#8220;nick&#8221; to Somali immigrants in Seattle.<\/p>\n<p>The second shows how reporters sometimes have the power to socially construct issues as one-sided, thus creating conditions in which they can act like activists (instead of &#8220;objective&#8221; observers). \u00a0This paper, published in <em>Media, Culture &amp; Society<\/em>, is called &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/lisawadedotcom.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/02\/wade-2011-journalism-advocacy-and-the-social-construction-of-consensus.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Journalism, Advocacy, and the Social Construction of Consensus<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Gwen and I also published two pieces together. \u00a0The next in our <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/class-readings-by-lisa-wade-and-gwen-sharp\/\" target=\"_blank\">series of <em>Contexts <\/em>essays<\/a> came out. \u00a0Titled &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/lisawadedotcom.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/02\/sharp-wade-2011-land-management-and-the-american-mustang.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Land Management and the American Mustang<\/a>,&#8221; it includes a picture of a burro! \u00a0You can&#8217;t beat that.<\/p>\n<p>We also submitted a class exercise to TRAILS. In it, we use images to illustrate <a href=\"http:\/\/trails.asanet.org\/Pages\/Resource.aspx?ResourceID=12558\" target=\"_blank\">the social construction of race and racial stereotypes<\/a>. \u00a0It&#8217;s been very popular with students.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><strong>Post Updates:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Remember that foreclosure firm that mocked people thrown out of their homes at their Halloween party? \u00a0Well, <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2011\/10\/31\/legal-firms-halloween-party-mocks-foreclosures\/\" target=\"_blank\">they&#8217;re closing their doors after\u00a0Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac declined to give them anymore business<\/a>. \u00a0Bye bye\u00a0Steven J. Baum PC.<\/p>\n<p>Apparently the company has been getting calls from consumers and reporters regarding the <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2011\/11\/29\/molsons-divergent-marketing-cosmo-vs-playboy\/\" target=\"_blank\">Molson Cosmo\/Playboy ads<\/a> we posted about yesterday. \u00a0It turns out the ad campaign is quite old (2002\/2003) and they would like to distance themselves from it now.<\/p>\n<p>Also, we&#8217;re still trying to figure out exactly <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2011\/11\/26\/peta-attacks-pubic-hair\/\" target=\"_blank\">what relationship PETA has to the anti-public hair advertisement for the Ministry of Waxing<\/a>. \u00a0Weigh in if you have any insight.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Progress on Course Guides:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Gwen has added race\/ethnicity, sex\/gender, and health\/medicine sections to her <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/course-guide-for-introduction-to-sociology-by-gwen-sharp\/\" target=\"_blank\">SocImages Course Guide for Introduction to Sociology<\/a>. \u00a0It&#8217;s a pretty amazing collection. \u00a0We&#8217;ve got guides for <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/course-guide-for-sociology-of-gender\/\" target=\"_blank\">Gender<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/course-guide-for-sociological-research-methods\/\" target=\"_blank\">Methods<\/a> too.<\/p>\n<p>Please do volunteer if you&#8217;re interested in collecting posts for a guide!
