{"id":40140,"date":"2011-10-04T13:31:38","date_gmt":"2011-10-04T18:31:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=40140"},"modified":"2013-11-09T05:36:43","modified_gmt":"2013-11-09T10:36:43","slug":"new-york-times-shifts-its-framing-of-the-arrests-at-occupy-wall-street","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2011\/10\/04\/new-york-times-shifts-its-framing-of-the-arrests-at-occupy-wall-street\/","title":{"rendered":"New York Times Shifts its Framing of the Arrests at Occupy Wall Street"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A blogger named\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/aluation.wordpress.com\/2011\/10\/03\/yet-another-example\/\" target=\"_blank\">Aluation<\/a> posted this graphic showing how the <em>New York Times<\/em> changed the first line of a story about the Occupy Wall Street demonstrations. \u00a0The change\u00a0subtly\u00a0shifted the blame for the mass arrest on the Brooklyn Bridge from the police to the protesters. \u00a0In the first version of the story, police allowed them onto the bridge and then &#8220;cut off and arrested&#8221; them. \u00a0In the second, there was a &#8220;showdown&#8221; in which demonstrators &#8220;marched onto the bridge.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Adding interest, the author of the piece was changed from &#8220;Colin Moynihan&#8221; to &#8220;Al Baker and Colin Moynihan.&#8221; \u00a0Who is Al Baker? \u00a0He is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2008\/10\/13\/business\/media\/13askthetimes.html?pagewanted=all\" target=\"_blank\">the guy in charge of the police bureau<\/a> at the <em>Times<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/10\/1.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-40141 aligncenter\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/10\/1.jpg\" width=\"561\" height=\"404\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/10\/1.jpg 701w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/10\/1-500x360.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 561px) 100vw, 561px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This is a great example of how important language is in framing events. \u00a0The difference isn&#8217;t dramatic, but a close look at the wording reveals a clear difference.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s also a great example of the power of certain individuals and institutions to shape how the rest of us understand reality. \u00a0We should be especially suspicious of the change in the authorship of the story. \u00a0When reporters have &#8220;beats,&#8221; they have to maintain good relationships with important sources on those beats. They rely on the same sources, over and over, to provide inside scoops. \u00a0If they alienate important sources, they have a much more difficult time doing their job.<\/p>\n<p>What I&#8217;m trying to say is&#8230; there is good sociological theory, based on strong evidence, to suggest that an important person in the New York police department saw this story, called Baker, and told him to change the wording. \u00a0In which case, Baker might have done so to avoid alienating a source on which his job depends. \u00a0I&#8217;m not saying that&#8217;s what happened, I&#8217;m just saying that these kinds of things do happen.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to <a href=\"http:\/\/montclairsoci.blogspot.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jay Livingston<\/a> for the tip.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">For another example of framing, see the <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2007\/08\/28\/racism-in-the-aftermath-of-hurricane-katrina\/\" target=\"_blank\">captions on a slideshow covering survivors of Hurricane Katrina<\/a>.<\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
