Here are some highlights from last month&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Advertising Fails, Sociology Wins:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A guest post by\u00a0Larkin Callaghan about a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2011\/10\/13\/looking-for-more-attention-drop-some-lbs\/\">Skinny Water advertisement telling women to lose weight<\/a> was re-posted on\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/jezebel.com\/5849577\/looking-for-more-attention-drop-some-pounds\" target=\"_blank\">Jezebel<\/a>. \u00a0Jezebel\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/jezebel.com\/5850115\/skinny-water-pulls-advertisement-telling-you-to-drop-some-pounds\" target=\"_blank\">reports<\/a> that the ad was pulled by the company thanks to complaints.<\/p>\n<p>Apparently\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2011\/10\/17\/dr-pepper-10-is-for-men-only-men-men-men-men\/\">the moronic anti-woman, man-mocking Dr. Pepper campaign<\/a> was a bust. The\u00a0<em>Wall Street Journal<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.smartmoney.com\/paydirt\/2011\/10\/21\/angry-women-is-not-what-dr-pepper-ordered\/\" target=\"_blank\">reports<\/a> that favorability fell by one-fourth among men and one-half among women after the ad campaign was released. \u00a0Hello advertisers! Treat your customers as if they have half a brain!<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Miss Representation<\/em> Documentary:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A documentary featuring SocImages Contributor Caroline Heldman, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/missrepresentation.org\/the-film\/\" target=\"_blank\">Miss Representation<\/a><\/em>, premiered this month to great acclaim. \u00a0It&#8217;s about the relationship between representations of women in the media and political participation. \u00a0Watch the <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=40718\">trailer<\/a> or catch this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?feature=player_embedded&amp;v=oHzO7vjxrTQ\" target=\"_blank\">interview on <em>Ellen<\/em><\/a> with Rachel Maddow, who was also in the documentary, along with Lisa Ling, Jane Fonda, Condoleezza Rice, Margaret Cho, Rosario Dawson, Katie Couric, and more.<\/p>\n<p><strong>New Course Guide:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We just added a new Course Guide organizing SocImages material in a way that is helpful to instructors. \u00a0This one is on Research Methods. Tomorrow I&#8217;ll be giving a quick talk about Occupy Wall Street on my own campus, Occidental College. \u00a0And I&#8217;m <a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/public-speaking\/\" target=\"_blank\">looking forward to visiting Harvard and the University of\u00a0Massachusetts, Amherst<\/a> in the last week of March.
