Most everything &#8212; how healthy we are, what we do for leisure, how we dress, etc &#8212; is correlated with income. \u00a0Twitter, I learned today, is an exception. \u00a0 According to a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pewinternet.org\/~\/media\/\/Files\/Reports\/2011\/Twitter%20Update%202011.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Pew study<\/a>, internet users across a wide array of income brackets are using Twitter at about the same rate.<\/p>\n<p>Income and % of internet users who use Twitter:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/08\/18.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-38977\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/08\/18.png\" width=\"490\" height=\"111\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>When we look at variables that correlate with income, however, such as race and education, we see an <em>un<\/em>even distribution.<\/p>\n<p>Race and % of internet users who use Twitter:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/08\/2.PNG.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-38979\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/08\/2.PNG.png\" width=\"494\" height=\"89\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Education and % of internet users who use Twitter:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/08\/31.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-2\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-38980\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/08\/31.png\" width=\"490\" height=\"89\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>So people with more education are <em>more <\/em>likely to use Twitter, but Whites (who, on average, get more education than Blacks and Hispanics) are <em>less <\/em>likely. \u00a0There&#8217;s something really interesting going on here. \u00a0Any idea what?<\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
