{"id":38653,"date":"2011-09-14T10:00:35","date_gmt":"2011-09-14T15:00:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=38653"},"modified":"2015-09-20T00:04:35","modified_gmt":"2015-09-20T05:04:35","slug":"cosmetic-surgery-and-being-normal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2011\/09\/14\/cosmetic-surgery-and-being-normal\/","title":{"rendered":"Cosmetic Surgery and Being Normal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Reshaping-Female-Body-Dilemma-Cosmetic\/dp\/0415906326\" target=\"_blank\">Reshaping the Female Body: The Dilemma of Cosmetic Surgery<\/a>, Kathy Davis upended the common sense view that people undergo plastic surgery because they want to be beautiful or handsome. \u00a0Instead, she found that most people sought cosmetic correction because they felt ugly or strange. \u00a0They didn&#8217;t want to be great-looking, or even good-looking, they wanted to be normal, unremarkable, to blend in with the crowd.<\/p>\n<p>I thought of Davis&#8217; book when I scrolled through <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zednelson.com\/?Home\" target=\"_blank\">Zed Nelson<\/a>&#8216;s photographic commentary on beauty, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zednelson.com\/?LoveMe:1\" target=\"_blank\">Love Me<\/a>, sent in by\u00a0zeynaparsel. \u00a0There&#8217;s a lot to see there, but here I&#8217;ve pulled out some of the pictures that I think resonate with Davis&#8217; findings.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.zednelson.com\/?LoveMe:4\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cI\u2019m competing with men 20 years younger than me.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.zednelson.com\/?LoveMe:15\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cTo be honest I never thought that I needed it [labiaplasty]. But I read about the procedure in a magazine.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.zednelson.com\/?LoveMe:10\" target=\"_blank\">\u201c<em>Men\u2019s Health<\/em> magazine (USA) hasn\u2018t had a hairy chest on it\u2019s cover since 1995.\u201d \u00a0<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
