{"id":38603,"date":"2011-10-04T10:33:23","date_gmt":"2011-10-04T15:33:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=38603"},"modified":"2013-11-09T05:36:47","modified_gmt":"2013-11-09T10:36:47","slug":"homosexuality-and-our-collective-consciousness","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2011\/10\/04\/homosexuality-and-our-collective-consciousness\/","title":{"rendered":"Homosexuality and our Collective Consciousness"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>While men have always had sex with men and women have always had sex with women, the idea that a person could be of a particular homosexual <em>type (<\/em>as opposed to someone who did homosexual <em>acts<\/em>) only emerged in the late 1800s (in Western culture anyway). \u00a0Even then, it took a very long time for the idea that gay people might be among us to filter through popular culture. \u00a0Only after an active gay liberation movement made homosexuality more visible did people actually start to look for it in people they knew.<\/p>\n<p>Accordingly, things that look very &#8220;gay&#8221; to us today, didn&#8217;t look that way before homosexuality became part of our consciousness.
