{"id":37988,"date":"2013-10-10T12:00:46","date_gmt":"2013-10-10T17:00:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=37988"},"modified":"2013-10-31T03:38:01","modified_gmt":"2013-10-31T08:38:01","slug":"breast-cancer-marketing-has-a-pink-problem","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2013\/10\/10\/breast-cancer-marketing-has-a-pink-problem\/","title":{"rendered":"Pink Makes Women Take Breast Cancer Less Seriously, Not More"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This week I had the pleasure of being a part of Take Part Live&#8217;s discussion of &#8220;pinktober.&#8221; \u00a0Here&#8217;s a really interesting piece of research that I didn&#8217;t get a chance to talk about, sent in by Lindsey B.<\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0paper in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rsm.nl\/portal\/page\/portal\/home\/faculty\/academic_departments\/marketing_management\/faculty\/faculty\/puntoni\/jmr%20breast%20cancer1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Journal of Marketing Research<\/em><\/a> suggesting that the current approach to raising awareness of breast cancer\u00a0hurts more than helps. \u00a0You might have noticed, just maybe, I mean if you&#8217;ve been paying attention, that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=breast+cancer&amp;es_sm=93&amp;source=lnms&amp;tbm=isch&amp;sa=X&amp;ei=v8JVUsKYE-jOigL7m4DAAQ&amp;ved=0CAkQ_AUoAQ&amp;biw=1600&amp;bih=732&amp;dpr=1#es_sm=93&amp;q=breast+cancer+awareness&amp;tbm=isch\" target=\"_blank\">breast cancer awareness<\/a> has become associated with the color <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/05\/19\/should-marketing-principles-be-applied-to-disease\/\">pink<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/08\/Screenshot_1.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-57516\" alt=\"Screenshot_1\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/08\/Screenshot_1-500x225.png\" width=\"500\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/08\/Screenshot_1-500x225.png 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/08\/Screenshot_1-1024x462.png 1024w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/08\/Screenshot_1.png 1551w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Stefano Puntoni and his colleagues\u00a0found that when women were exposed to gender cues, like the color pink, they were <em>less <\/em>likely than women who had not been primed with a gender cue to think that they might someday get breast cancer and to say that they&#8217;d be willing to donate to the cause. \u00a0Pink, in other words, decreased both their willingness to fund research and\u00a0the seriousness with which women took the disease.<\/p>\n<p>Puntoni explains this finding with a common psychological tendency. When people are faced with a personal threat, they tend to subconsciously go on the defensive. \u00a0In this case, when women are exposed to information about breast cancer at the same time that they are reminded that they, specifically, are vulnerable to it, they subconsciously try to push away the idea that they&#8217;re vulnerable and that breast cancer is something that they, or anyone, needs to worry about it.<\/p>\n<p><em>Originally posted in 2010, with an extended version appearing at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.msmagazine.com\/blog\/blog\/2011\/10\/21\/the-problem-with-pink\" target=\"_blank\">Ms.<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
