Instead, she draws our attention to insidious and ubiquitous tropes that many of us have, nonetheless, never quite noticed before, exactly because they&#8217;ve simply become the water we swim in (e.g., <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2011\/04\/02\/anita-sarkeesian-on-the-manic-pixie-dream-girl\/\" target=\"_blank\">the Manic Pixie Dreamgirl<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>In this episode she reveals <a href=\"http:\/\/www.feministfrequency.com\/2011\/07\/tropes-vs-women-5-the-mystical-pregnancy\/\" target=\"_blank\">the Mystical Pregnancy trope<\/a>, common\u00a0in science fiction, in which women are involuntarily\u00a0impregnated\u00a0by aliens and monsters for nefarious and\u00a0frightening\u00a0purposes. \u00a0Following <a href=\"http:\/\/laurashapiro.dreamwidth.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Laura Shapiro<\/a>, she calls out writers and directors for using pregnancy as a form of &#8220;torture porn&#8221; and using women&#8217;s biological capacity as a plot device, meanwhile ignoring the real, non-fiction threats to women&#8217;s reproductive rights.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><object width=\"540\" height=\"390\" classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowScriptAccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/0rhH_QGXtgQ?version=3\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><\/object><\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
