Sophie R., Dmitriy T.M., and my sister, Keely, sent a link to <a href=\"http:\/\/adage.com\/article\/global-news\/u-k-bans-l-oreal-ads-overly-airbrushed-julia-roberts\/228952\/\" target=\"_blank\">a news story<\/a> about two ads, banned this week, for\u00a0Lancome\u00a0and Maybelline (both owned by L&#8217;Oreal). \u00a0The Advertising Standards Authority claimed that the ads were\u00a0&#8220;misleading&#8221; and an &#8220;exaggeration.&#8221; \u00a0&#8220;On the basis of the evidence we received, the ruling stated, &#8220;we could not conclude that the ad image accurately illustrated what effect the product could achieve.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/07\/15.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-37945\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/07\/15.png\" width=\"255\" height=\"336\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/07\/127.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-37952\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/07\/127.jpg\" width=\"428\" height=\"251\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/07\/127.jpg 612w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/07\/127-500x293.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 428px) 100vw, 428px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Authority, then, is enforcing a simple truth-in-advertising rule. \u00a0Still, it&#8217;s an impressive victory for activists against a very powerful corporation. \u00a0Then again, L&#8217;Oreal is getting a lot of attention from the news media (and blogs, erg) and these images are going up everywhere, for free.<\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
