{"id":37680,"date":"2011-08-11T10:10:13","date_gmt":"2011-08-11T15:10:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=37680"},"modified":"2013-11-09T06:16:02","modified_gmt":"2013-11-09T11:16:02","slug":"young-male-americans-prefer-boy-children","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2011\/08\/11\/young-male-americans-prefer-boy-children\/","title":{"rendered":"(Young) (Male) Americans Prefer Boy Children"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Cross-posted at <a href=\"http:\/\/msmagazine.com\/blog\/blog\/2011\/08\/12\/young-male-americans-prefer-boy-children\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ms.<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/jezebel.com\/5830103\/young-american-men-prefer-to-have-male-children\" target=\"_blank\">Jezebel<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In a previous post I&#8217;ve argued <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/06\/22\/new-york-times-frames-sex-selection-as-culturally-asian\/\">against framing a preference for boy children as &#8220;culturally Asian.&#8221;<\/a> New <a href=\"http:\/\/globalpublicsquare.blogs.cnn.com\/2011\/06\/23\/gallup-americans-prefer-boys-to-girls-just-as-they-did-in-1941\/?hpt=hp_c2\" target=\"_blank\">data from Gallup<\/a>, sent in by Kari B., shows that this preference is alive and well among Americans, at least among young men. \u00a0While women are most likely to have no opinion and about equally likely to prefer a girl or boy, men are significantly more likely to prefer a boy. \u00a0This preference is strongest among younger men, but still present among men over 50. \u00a0Whereas women become increasingly indifferent with age and, secondarily, begin to prefer girls.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/07\/121.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-37681\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/07\/121.jpg\" width=\"512\" height=\"288\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/07\/121.jpg 640w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/07\/121-500x281.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The editors at CNN note that, since children are mostly born to young people, and indifferent women may bend to men&#8217;s preferences, new sex selection technologies threaten to create a gender imbalance in the U.S.<\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
