{"id":37672,"date":"2011-07-21T10:00:42","date_gmt":"2011-07-21T15:00:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=37672"},"modified":"2017-09-17T13:22:25","modified_gmt":"2017-09-17T18:22:25","slug":"race-and-the-changing-shape-of-cheerleading","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2011\/07\/21\/race-and-the-changing-shape-of-cheerleading\/","title":{"rendered":"Race and the Changing Shape of Cheerleading"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Cheerleading started in the United States in the late 19<sup>th<\/sup> century as a male activity whose purpose was to organize crowds cheering at football games.\u00a0\u00a0 In 1923, women joined cheerleading squads and have increasingly dominated this sport.\u00a0 Cheerleading traditionally features chanting, gymnastics, and tumbling.\u00a0 The dominant image of cheerleaders\u00a0 is a perky, always smiling, female who fits a particular body mold.<\/p>\n<p>However, in the late 1970s, a new style of cheerleading emerged in North Carolina and Virginia.\u00a0 This African American originated style of cheerleading is called \u201cStomp n Shake&#8221;. \u00a0Stomp n Shake cheerleaders have the same goals as &#8220;traditional cheerleaders&#8221; &#8212; to motivate their sports team and raise the enthusiasm of fans. However, Stomp n Shake\u00a0uses African American dance\/stepping aesthetics and African American bragging and insult traditions (dozens\/snapping) to &#8220;pump up&#8221; their audience. \u00a0Some Stomp n Shake squads include tumbling and stunts in their repertoire, while other squads don&#8217;t.\u00a0 Mostly women, Stomp n Shake cheerleaders rarely smile.\u00a0 Instead their goal is to look serious and intimidating when they are chanting their cheers and performing their cheer routines.\u00a0 As the name implies, hip and butt shaking are common features of Stomp n Shake routines, something usually disallowed in most mainstream competitive cheerleading.<\/p>\n<p>Virginia State University Woo Woos (Work It&#8230;):<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><object width=\"425\" height=\"349\" classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/blDqcHBu-Cs?version=3&amp;hl=en_US\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><\/object><\/p>\n<p>Howard University Bison Cheerleaders:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><object width=\"425\" height=\"349\" classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/_8ZIz-IkZSI?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US&amp;rel=0\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><\/object><\/p>\n<p>Prince Edward County High School, SASSY (We Shake The Best):<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><object width=\"425\" height=\"349\" classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/6jnwq5Pq40A?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US&amp;rel=0\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><\/object><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s also interesting to note that Stomp n Shake cheerleading squads\u00a0 appears to be more accepting of cheerleaders who don\u2019t fit the relatively slender body build of mainstream cheerleaders.\u00a0 Comment threads for YouTube videos of usually include comments that certain squad members are overweight and therefore should not be cheerleaders.\u00a0\u00a0 Usual responses to those comments are that a \u201cthick\u201d(big boned) body frame is common for many Black females, and, besides,\u00a0 a cheerleader&#8217;s weight has nothing to do with her cheerleading skills.<\/p>\n<p>Stomp n Shake is changing the way cheerleading is performed in the United States and elsewhere, often to the dismay of many cheerleading coaches, cheerleaders, and fans who very much prefer that cheerleading remain the way it is. \u00a0However, the influence of such movies as the <em>Bring It On<\/em> cheerleader series (five movies from 2000-2009) and the posting of videos on YouTube &#8212; along with the desire of cheerleading squads to be cutting edge and &#8220;hip&#8221;&#8211; have already influenced the performance styles of some more \u201ctraditional\u201d cheerleading squads.\u00a0 It will be interesting to see whether Stomp n Shake cheerleading will also increase the acceptance in mainstream cheerleading for cheerleaders whose physical builds\u00a0 are different than those of the typical cheerleader in the past and the present.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>Azizi Powell earned a B.A. in sociology from Upsala College, East Orange New Jersey. \u00a0She is a retired health &amp;
