{"id":3742,"date":"2008-10-27T23:12:36","date_gmt":"2008-10-28T04:12:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=3742"},"modified":"2010-11-24T02:31:41","modified_gmt":"2010-11-24T07:31:41","slug":"pro-environment-anti-immigration-activism","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/10\/27\/pro-environment-anti-immigration-activism\/","title":{"rendered":"Pro-Environment Anti-Immigration Activism"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve posted about the phenomenon of what I&#8217;ve called leftist balkanization or\u00a0the way in which leftist causes tend to be narrowly focused such that they undermine\u00a0other leftist causes\u00a0(see <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/07\/06\/leftist-balkanization\/\" target=\"_self\">here<\/a> for my original post and <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/09\/05\/leftist-prejudice-against-rural-life\/\" target=\"_self\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/10\/07\/divide-and-conquer-join-and-resist\/\" target=\"_self\">here<\/a> for two follow-ups).\u00a0 Perhaps the opposite of such balkanization is social movements that try to bring together issues that find themselves on opposite sides of the political spectrum.\u00a0 Below are two advertisements for\u00a0the pro-environment anti-immigration movement.\u00a0 The argument is that restricting immigration is good for the environment.<\/p>\n<p>This first commercial from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.capsweb.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Californians for Population Stabilization<\/a> makes exactly this point:<\/p>\n<p><object width=\"425\" height=\"344\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/eDFFbiIbm2c&amp;color1=0xb1b1b1&amp;color2=0xcfcfcf&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><\/object><\/p>\n<p>You might be asking yourself whether this pro-environment anti-immigration message is really just an anti-immigration message shrouded in leftist rhetoric.\u00a0\u00a0 In this case, at least based on the commercial below from the same organization, the answer appears to be &#8220;yes.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><object width=\"425\" height=\"344\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/Qim9qiBWsZg&amp;color1=0xb1b1b1&amp;color2=0xcfcfcf&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><\/object><\/p>\n<p>Of course, it&#8217;s not necessarily true that all anti-immigrant pro-environment messages are secretly simply xenophobic.
