New Zealand&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mammothsupply.co.nz\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mammoth Supply Co.<\/a> (a subsidiary of the multinational dairy giant Fonterra) is trying to convince men that yogurt is super manly and tough, &#8220;built to tame a man&#8217;s hunger.&#8221; The ads reinforce a whole range of rules about masculinity, which Erin nicely sums up as &#8220;the same old mythbashing that men need things that are big, tough,  substantial, strong and rugged, and that coded-feminine activities  (crying, being too involved in one&#8217;s personal appearance, coming into  physical contact with people of the same sex) are inferior and weak&#8221;:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center\"><object width=\"500\" height=\"314\"><param name=\"movie\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/1foVGaooUFQ?version=3&amp;hl=en_US\" \/><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><\/object><\/p>\n<p>Via <a href=\"http:\/\/copyranter.blogspot.com\/2011\/02\/finally-yogurt-for-hardass-men.html\">Copyranter<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The website, which assures the reader that this is &#8220;real man food, man,&#8221; as well as each carton of yogurt includes additional helpful tips:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/07\/mammoth.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-37345 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/07\/mammoth-500x126.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"126\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/07\/mammoth-500x126.jpg 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/07\/mammoth.jpg 892w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/07\/DSCF2796.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-37350 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/07\/DSCF2796-500x375.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/07\/DSCF2796-500x375.jpg 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/07\/DSCF2796.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Lisa K. recently saw an ad for Billy Tea in a newspaper that implies men and women are no longer sufficiently masculine and feminine, unlike the good old days when the tea was first produced:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/07\/tea.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-2\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-37347 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/07\/tea.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"477\" height=\"605\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/07\/tea.jpg 502w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/07\/tea-394x500.jpg 394w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 477px) 100vw, 477px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thenewspaperworks.com.au\/go\/news\/billy-tea-shows-its-age\/6bcc3eeb-f61a-a16d-35293e25168f5bd6\" target=\"_blank\">Here&#8217;s<\/a> another one of their ads:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/07\/110419_013952597_billy-tea-anzac-day-hair-article.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-3\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-37348 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/07\/110419_013952597_billy-tea-anzac-day-hair-article.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"362\" height=\"488\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Sarah B. sent in this Miller High Life ad (which she blogged about at <a href=\"http:\/\/sarahsadventuresinmediocrity.blogspot.com\/2011\/05\/men-dont-let-men-eat-vegetables.html\" target=\"_blank\">Adventures in Mediocrity<\/a>) that makes it clear that the only types of salad men should eat are the type without, you know, girly vegetables:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center\"><object width=\"500\" height=\"314\"><param name=\"movie\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/mPRj7r26QAQ&amp;hl=en_US&amp;feature=player_embedded&amp;version=3\" \/><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowScriptAccess\" value=\"always\" \/><\/object><\/p>\n<p>In another example of gendering foods, Lisa R. pointed out Applebee&#8217;s commercials for its set of dishes with under 550 calories. Women <em>love<\/em> eating low-calorie meals:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center\"><object width=\"500\" height=\"314\"><param name=\"movie\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/TUvHYL0VjQU?version=3&amp;hl=en_US\" \/><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><\/object><\/p>\n<p>The commercial aimed at men, titled &#8220;Manly Man,&#8221; presents ordering from the 550-calorie menu as something men might be a bit embarrassed about, but don&#8217;t worry &#8212; once the guys see your huge plate of food, your masculinity will once again be unquestioned:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center\"><object width=\"500\" height=\"314\"><param name=\"movie\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/e_s6e42DeOo?version=3&amp;hl=en_US\" \/><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><\/object><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Jeremiah, Sarah S., Nikki R., and Erin H. sent us a great example of a company trying to make a feminized food safe for men.
