{"id":37034,"date":"2011-06-29T10:00:51","date_gmt":"2011-06-29T15:00:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/familyinequality.wordpress.com\/?p=2848"},"modified":"2015-09-20T23:06:19","modified_gmt":"2015-09-21T04:06:19","slug":"no-family-for-you-examples-of-state-disruption-of-families","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2011\/06\/29\/no-family-for-you-examples-of-state-disruption-of-families\/","title":{"rendered":"No Family for You: Examples of State Disruption"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Cross-posted at <a href=\"http:\/\/familyinequality.wordpress.com\/2011\/06\/24\/no-family-for-you\/\" target=\"_blank\">Family Inequality<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s been a big week for stories of families denied and disrupted by the state. \u00a0Family denial came up in the form of bodily intervention (as in North Carolina\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/2011\/06\/22\/137347548\/n-c-considers-paying-forced-sterilization-victims\">eugenics program<\/a>), border control (as when <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/06\/26\/magazine\/my-life-as-an-undocumented-immigrant.html\">Jose Antonio Vargas<\/a>&#8216;s mother put him on a one-way plane for the U.S.), parents\u2019 incarceration, or legal denial of family rights (the refusal to recognize gay marriage, or what I suggest we call\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/familyinequality.wordpress.com\/tag\/homogamy\/\">homogamous marriage<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>(1) \u00a0North Carolina\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/familyinequality.wordpress.com\/2010\/02\/28\/what-for-sterilization-victims\/\">eugenics program<\/a> was the subject of hearings this week,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/2011\/06\/22\/137347548\/n-c-considers-paying-forced-sterilization-victims\">dragging on<\/a> with\u00a0no compensation for the 7,600 people who were involuntarily sterilized between 1929 and 1977. A collection of literature at the <a href=\"http:\/\/statelibrary.ncdcr.gov\/digital\/healthpath\/\">State Library of North Carolina<\/a> includes this 1950 propaganda pamphlet:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/familyinequality.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/06\/sterlization-pam.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2853\" src=\"http:\/\/familyinequality.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/06\/sterlization-pam.jpg?w=500&amp;h=355\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"355\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">(2) Jose Antonio Vargas, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/06\/26\/magazine\/my-life-as-an-undocumented-immigrant.html\">recounted his life<\/a> as an undocumented immigrant. His mother\u00a0put him on a plane for the U.S. with false papers, maybe never to see him again.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">(3) While a judge declared the federal\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/articles.latimes.com\/2011\/jun\/15\/local\/la-me-0615-doma-bankruptcy-20110615\">law against recognizing gay marriage<\/a> unconstitutional, the New York legislature maybe <a href=\"http:\/\/cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com\/2011\/06\/24\/frustration-rising-in-albany-with-no-vote-on-marriage\/\">moved toward legal recognition<\/a>, and President Obama\u2019s support of gay marriage\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/stories\/0611\/57686.html\">apparently stalled<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">(4) The 40th anniversary of the drug war\u00a0was a bleak reminder of the millions of U.S. families\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/familyinequality.wordpress.com\/2011\/06\/17\/family-consequences-of-the-drug-war\/\">separated by incarceration<\/a> during that time.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.usprisonculture.com\/blog\/2011\/02\/10\/out-of-the-mouths-of-babes-ten-questions-often-asked-by-children-whose-parents-are-in-prison\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.usprisonculture.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/mom_in_prison2_smallfile.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"383\" height=\"241\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The text says, \u201cmore women and mothers are behind bars than at any time in U.S. history,\u201d from\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usprisonculture.com\/\">(www.usprisonculture.com)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/familyinequality.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/06\/parentalincarceration.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/familyinequality.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/06\/parentalincarceration.jpg?w=297&amp;h=328\" alt=\"\" width=\"297\" height=\"328\" \/><\/a>(My graph from data in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/futureofchildren.org\/futureofchildren\/publications\/docs\/20_02_08.pdf\">an article<\/a> by Wildeman and Western in <em>The Future of Children<\/em>)<\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\">Philip N.
