But how about \u201cA really bad recession is good for your marriage\u201d? No joke. The National Marriage Project has released a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.virginia.edu\/marriageproject\/pdfs\/NMP-GreatRecession.pdf\">report<\/a> with a section claiming that the current economic crises has produced \u201ctwo silver linings\u201d for marriages. (Philip Cohen at <a href=\"http:\/\/familyinequality.wordpress.com\/2011\/06\/06\/distorting-data-on-divorce-at-the-national-marriage-project\/\">Family Inequality<\/a> eviscerates this report with the level of snark that it deserves.)\u00a0 A bad recession is good for crime too, or so says the title of James Q. Wilson\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/article\/SB10001424052702304066504576345553135009870.html\">article<\/a> in last Sunday\u2019s Wall Street Journal, \u201cHard Times, Fewer Crimes.\u201d*<\/p>\n<p>And now welcome Peabody Energy, the world\u2019s largest private coal company, which spends millions each year lobbying against clean-air legislation. \u00a0Last month, Peabody was the object of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.coalcares.org\/\">Coal Cares<\/a>, a clever spoof Website.<\/p>\n<p><em> <\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/06\/17.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-36642\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/06\/17.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"382\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/06\/17.jpg 660w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/06\/17-500x362.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><\/a><\/em>(click to enlarge; source:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wired.com\/wiredscience\/2011\/05\/coalcares\/\" target=\"_blank\">Wired<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>It was Peabody\u2019s press release in response that makes them the clear winner of the Cancer-Is-Good-For-You competition.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The United Nations has linked life expectancy, educational attainment and income with per-capita electricity use, and the World Resources Institute found that for every tenfold increase in per-capita energy use, individuals live 10 years longer.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The spurious logic &#8212; the implied fallacy of composition and the attempt to fob off correlation as cause &#8212; is so obvious that it could easily be part of the Coal Cares spoof.\u00a0 But no, it was for real, at least while it lasted.\u00a0 Unfortunately, Peabody removed the document before we could award them the CIGFY trophy .<\/p>\n<p>What the UN data actually show is not surprising: Richer countries produce more electricity. They also have better health, education, and income. The message Peabody wants us to get takes the global and misapplies it locally, and it reverses cause and effect: If you want to be long-lived, educated, and rich, live near a coal-driven power plant.\u00a0 Cancer, asthma, and heart disease are all good for you.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;<\/p>\n<p>*I don\u2019t know if Wilson also wrote that title. Unlike the post-hoc logic suggested by the title, Wilson does not argue that the recession caused the decrease.
