That is, the poorer you are the more likely it is that you will be overweight. \u00a0This is, in part, because healthy, low-calorie food tends to be more expensive that calorie rich, nutrient poor food; and also because <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2011\/01\/16\/food-deserts-in-the-u-s\/\">poor neighborhoods have fewer grocery stores<\/a>, forcing the poor, especially if they don&#8217;t have cars, to shop for groceries at corner stores, gas stations, and <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/09\/24\/the-ubiquity-of-mcdonalds\/\">fast food restaurants<\/a>. \u00a0When there are so many other things to worry about, like not going hungry, <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2010\/08\/10\/satters-hierarchy-of-food-needs\/\">food quality is not prioritized<\/a>. \u00a0Level of fitness, then, correlates with social class (and the time and money it affords you) and the things that correlate with social class, like level of education.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.americanfitnessindex.org\/docs\/reports\/2011_afi_report_final.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">American College of Sports Medicine<\/a> has released data showing these correlations, if measured at the level of U.S. metro areas, as reported at <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/life\/archive\/2011\/05\/americas-fittest-cities\/239565\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Atlantic<\/a><\/em> and sent along by Tracie Hitter, a doctoral student at New Mexico State University. \u00a0First, fitness level is correlated with average income in these areas:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/06\/11.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-36620\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/06\/11.png\" width=\"453\" height=\"362\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/06\/11.png 943w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/06\/11-500x399.png 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 453px) 100vw, 453px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Second, fitness level correlates with average level of education (here called &#8220;human capital&#8221;):<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/06\/2.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-36621\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/06\/2.png\" width=\"453\" height=\"362\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/06\/2.png 943w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/06\/2-500x399.png 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 453px) 100vw, 453px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And fitness level correlates with overall well-being, a measure related to both fitness and socioeconomic class:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/06\/31.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-2\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-36622\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/06\/31.png\" width=\"453\" height=\"362\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/06\/31.png 943w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/06\/31-500x399.png 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 453px) 100vw, 453px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here are some selected metro areas plotted in relation to one another:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/06\/41.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-3\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-36623\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/06\/41.png\" width=\"469\" height=\"362\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/06\/41.png 977w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/06\/41-500x386.png 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 469px) 100vw, 469px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
