{"id":36510,"date":"2011-08-06T10:59:22","date_gmt":"2011-08-06T15:59:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=36510"},"modified":"2013-11-09T06:16:36","modified_gmt":"2013-11-09T11:16:36","slug":"same-baby-different-color","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2011\/08\/06\/same-baby-different-color\/","title":{"rendered":"Same Baby, Different Color"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Cross-posted at <a href=\"http:\/\/scientopia.org\/blogs\/guestblog\/2011\/08\/06\/same-baby-different-color\/\" target=\"_blank\">Scientopia<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In March we posted <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2011\/03\/10\/baby-face-gendering-infants\/\">a set of greeting cards<\/a>: a pink and a blue one congratulating new parents on a girl and a blue respectively. \u00a0The cards pictured exactly the same baby, revealing the way in which we gender infants before there are any discernable signs of sex (outside of the genitals). \u00a0Since then we&#8217;ve received two more examples of the phenomenon. \u00a0The first, sent in by Christine, is from FailBlog:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/03\/137.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-36503\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/03\/137.jpg\" width=\"280\" height=\"374\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/03\/137.jpg 400w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/03\/137-374x500.jpg 374w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 280px) 100vw, 280px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The second is for a (<a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/01\/21\/pink-earplugs-for-your-beauty-sleep\/\">pointlessly gendered<\/a>) hygiene kit at Walmart, sent in by Laura Confer:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/05\/135.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-36512\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/05\/135-1024x704.jpg\" width=\"553\" height=\"380\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/05\/135-1024x704.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/05\/135-500x343.jpg 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/05\/135.jpg 1080w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 553px) 100vw, 553px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The use of exactly the same baby just tickles me. \u00a0The marketers know that babies look like, well, babies. \u00a0We aren&#8217;t &#8220;opposite sexes,&#8221; especially at six months old. \u00a0But the sex of the child is very important to adults. \u00a0So they use color cues to make the consumer feel like they&#8217;re choosing the &#8220;right&#8221; or the &#8220;cutest&#8221; item. \u00a0But they can use any child &#8212; girl or boy &#8212; to sell the item&#8230; because <em>that&#8217;s not what it&#8217;s actually about<\/em>.<\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
