{"id":36439,"date":"2011-06-03T10:24:09","date_gmt":"2011-06-03T15:24:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=36439"},"modified":"2015-09-20T23:10:24","modified_gmt":"2015-09-21T04:10:24","slug":"overcrowding-in-california-prisons","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2011\/06\/03\/overcrowding-in-california-prisons\/","title":{"rendered":"Overcrowding in California Prisons"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As a consequence of the &#8220;drug war&#8221; that began in the 1980s, <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/03\/02\/1-in-31\/\" target=\"_self\">the U.S. prison population has skyrocketed<\/a> and, despite <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2010\/12\/09\/comparing-increases-in-u-s-corrections-and-higher-education-spending\/\" target=\"_blank\">dramatic increases in corrections spending<\/a>, many prisons are now grossly overcrowded. \u00a0This issue rose to the attention of the\u00a0U.S. Supreme Court which has ruled that California must release or relocate more than 33,000 prisoners because prisons are so crowded as to amount to cruel and unusual punishment (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/news\/local\/la-me-court-prisons-20110524%2C0%2C2973297.story\" target=\"_blank\">source<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>A recent issue of Mother Jones included <a href=\"http:\/\/motherjones.com\/politics\/2011\/05\/california-prison-overcrowding-photos\/mule-creek\" target=\"_blank\">a frightening expos\u00e9 of the overcrowding in these prisons<\/a>. \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/06\/1.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
