{"id":36293,"date":"2011-06-15T10:45:37","date_gmt":"2011-06-15T15:45:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=36293"},"modified":"2013-11-11T02:47:52","modified_gmt":"2013-11-11T07:47:52","slug":"the-virginwhore-binary-in-world-war-ii-vd-propaganda","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2011\/06\/15\/the-virginwhore-binary-in-world-war-ii-vd-propaganda\/","title":{"rendered":"The Virgin\/Whore Binary in World War II Propaganda"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We&#8217;ve posted previously about the ways in which <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/05\/25\/personifying-danger\/\">World War II posters aimed at U.S. soldiers warned against &#8220;venereal disease&#8221;<\/a> (what we now know as sexually transmitted infections) by personifying them as dangerous, diseased women. \u00a0Molly W. and Jessica H. have shown us to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.100yearsofsex.org\/posters\" target=\"_blank\">a new source of propaganda posters<\/a>, so now seems as good a time to revisit the phenomenon. \u00a0In our previous post, I articulated the problem as follows:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Remember, venereal disease is NOT a woman. It\u2019s bacteria or virus that passes between women and men. Women do not give it to men. Women and men pass it to each other. When venereal disease is personified as a woman, it makes women the diseased, guilty party and men the vulnerable, innocent party.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This first poster is an excellent example. \u00a0In it, the woman is synonymous with death:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/05\/130.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-36301\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/05\/130.jpg\" width=\"320\" height=\"427\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/05\/130.jpg 400w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/05\/130-374x500.jpg 374w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 320px) 100vw, 320px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In other posters, women are simply seen as the diseased party. \u00a0Concern that a soldier might pass disease to &#8220;pick ups&#8221;
