{"id":35919,"date":"2011-05-27T10:19:27","date_gmt":"2011-05-27T15:19:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=35919"},"modified":"2013-11-11T03:08:46","modified_gmt":"2013-11-11T08:08:46","slug":"work-and-leisure-in-30-countries","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2011\/05\/27\/work-and-leisure-in-30-countries\/","title":{"rendered":"Work and Leisure in 30 Countries"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dolores and Diego sent in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oecd.org\/document\/60\/0,3746,en_21571361_44315115_47567356_1_1_1_1,00.html\" target=\"_blank\">a new study by the\u00a0Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development<\/a> (OECD). \u00a0The study measured time use in 30 countries, demonstrating significant differences in the amount of work and leisure enjoyed, on average.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/05\/11.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-35931\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/05\/11.png\" width=\"540\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/05\/11.png 600w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/05\/11-500x333.png 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The country reporting the fewest work hours was Belgium at just about 7 hours a day. \u00a0The country reporting the most was Mexico; Mexicans reported working almost 10 hours per day. \u00a0That&#8217;s enough hours to translate into 45.5 extra days a year that Mexicans work in excess of Belgians, and a month of extra work hours compared to the average country in this study (at 8 hours a day).<\/p>\n<p>The OECD has also reported <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/07\/30\/the-gender-gap-in-leisure-time\/\" target=\"_blank\">gender gaps in leisure across countries<\/a> (Norway had the smallest gap in that study; Italy the largest) and we&#8217;ve seen <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2010\/09\/16\/his-leisure-and-her-responsibilities-on-msn\/\">the gender leisure gap reflected in American advertising<\/a>.<\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
