If you aren&#8217;t familiar with Shape-Ups, they&#8217;re the sneakers with the specially-shaped soles that supposedly firm your butt as you walk. Now Skechers has introduced a line of Shape-Ups targeted at tween girls (via <a href=\"http:\/\/shine.yahoo.com\/channel\/health\/do-little-girls-really-need-shape-up-toning-sneakers-2482670\/\" target=\"_blank\">Shine<\/a>):<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center\"><object width=\"500\" height=\"390\"><param name=\"movie\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/30N-4odV1OY?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US\" \/><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><\/object><\/p>\n<p>I was particularly struck by the scene at 23 seconds in, where the girl confidently bounces along in her Shape-Up, trailed by exhausted-looking boys dressed up as food:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/05\/skechers1.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-35846 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/05\/skechers1-500x259.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"259\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/05\/skechers1-500x259.jpg 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/05\/skechers1.jpg 647w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Apparently Shape-Ups not only firm your butt, they give you the ability to reject food as well.<\/p>\n<p>Though Skechers apparently claims to be targeting childhood obesity, at least <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/templates\/story\/story.php?storyId=129027089\" target=\"_blank\">two independent studies<\/a> found that these types of shoes have no benefit in terms of fitness, whether measured by calories burned or level of muscle toning. But as <a href=\"http:\/\/jezebel.com\/5799749\/youre-never-too-young-for-ass+sculpting-shoes-that-dont-work\" target=\"_blank\">Morning Gloria at Jezebel<\/a> points out, girls are never too young to be socialized into buying products of questionable effectiveness &#8212; and avoiding food &#8212; in the hopes of &#8220;looking good and having fun,&#8221; as the ad put it.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Kristie V. let us know about a new item in Skechers&#8217; Shape-Ups line of shoes.
