{"id":35553,"date":"2011-08-05T10:11:04","date_gmt":"2011-08-05T15:11:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=35553"},"modified":"2013-11-09T06:16:44","modified_gmt":"2013-11-09T11:16:44","slug":"has-the-recession-slowed-the-birth-rate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2011\/08\/05\/has-the-recession-slowed-the-birth-rate\/","title":{"rendered":"Has the Recession Slowed the Birth Rate?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Cross-posted at <a href=\"http:\/\/scientopia.org\/blogs\/guestblog\/2011\/08\/05\/has-the-recession-slowed-the-birthrate\/\" target=\"_blank\">Scientopia<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>As demonstrated by some figures posted at <a href=\"http:\/\/familyinequality.wordpress.com\/2011\/04\/18\/fertile-decline\/\" target=\"_blank\">Family Inequality<\/a>, the U.S. birthrate has dropped during the recession:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/04\/142.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-35555\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/04\/142.jpg\" width=\"309\" height=\"417\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/04\/142.jpg 442w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/04\/142-371x500.jpg 371w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 309px) 100vw, 309px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But the birth rate hasn&#8217;t dropped for all American women equally. \u00a0Women who&#8217;ve already had two children were most likely to skip having a child during this period, and women who already had one child were more likely to delay or end childbearing than women with no children. \u00a0 But women who already had three children were relatively ready to plow forward with a fourth, even more ready than childless women.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/04\/216.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-35556\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/04\/216.jpg\" width=\"422\" height=\"275\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/04\/216.jpg 880w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/04\/216-500x325.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 422px) 100vw, 422px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>To make an even stronger case that the recession inhibited childbearing, Philip Cohen correlated birth data by state and state unemployment rates (both from the\u00a0Bureau of Labor Statistics). \u00a0His figure shows that &#8220;fertility fell more where the recession hit harder&#8221;:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/04\/310.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-2\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-35557\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/04\/310.jpg\" width=\"420\" height=\"373\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Great stuff, as always, from <a href=\"http:\/\/familyinequality.wordpress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Family Inequality<\/a>.<\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
