{"id":35420,"date":"2011-04-21T10:57:12","date_gmt":"2011-04-21T15:57:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=35420"},"modified":"2015-09-20T23:18:11","modified_gmt":"2015-09-21T04:18:11","slug":"vintage-pin-ups-before-and-after","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2011\/04\/21\/vintage-pin-ups-before-and-after\/","title":{"rendered":"Vintage Pin-Ups Before and After"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>History and women&#8217;s studies professor Keri Manning, along with Aydrea at <a href=\"http:\/\/theoreoexperience.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Oreo Experience<\/a>, Sully R., and Dmitriy T.M., sent a link to a series of illustrations of pin-up girls (from the &#8217;50s, I&#8217;m estimating) alongside the original photograph on which they were modeled (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.buzzfeed.com\/daves4\/20-classic-pin-up-girls-before-photoshop\" target=\"_blank\">Buzzfeed<\/a>). \u00a0Today <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/tag\/re-touching\/\">we bemoan photoshopping<\/a>, and here we have pre-photoshop examples of the kind of free-reign that artists had in idealizing their subject. \u00a0Dr. Manning notes, for example, that overall:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Bellies become flatter.\u00a0Breasts become perkier. \u00a0Cleavage appears that wasn&#8217;t there before. \u00a0Waistlines shrink; the difference between the bustline and waistline gets more pronounced. \u00a0Hair gets longer. \u00a0Hair goes from brunette to blonde. \u00a0Inner thighs emerge from the shadows. \u00a0Cheeks become flushed, lips are quite red.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>An interesting look at a photoshop forerunner.\u00a0See the\u00a0images at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.buzzfeed.com\/daves4\/20-classic-pin-up-girls-before-photoshop\" target=\"_blank\">Buzzfeed<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pristina.org\/2011\/04\/11\/pin-ups-antes-e-depois\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pristina<\/a>.<\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
