{"id":3542,"date":"2008-10-24T22:16:35","date_gmt":"2008-10-25T03:16:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=3542"},"modified":"2010-11-24T02:19:56","modified_gmt":"2010-11-24T07:19:56","slug":"friendship-ideology","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/10\/24\/friendship-ideology\/","title":{"rendered":"Friendship Ideology"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Trouble-Friendship-Americans-Think-Straight\/dp\/0871136198\" target=\"_blank\">The Trouble With Friendship<\/a><\/em>, Benjamin DeMott argues that it is suggested, all too often, that the solution to our troubled race relations is just, well, getting to know and like each other.\u00a0 Television and the movies, for example, are replete with examples of racial harmony.\u00a0 I mean, who <em>doesn&#8217;t<\/em> have a black friend or neighbor!?<\/p>\n<p>DeMott&#8217;s friendship ideology obscures the institutional causes of racial inequality that undergird racial tension in our society.\u00a0 Learning to like each other is not going to solve racial inequality in our society because individual one-on-one racism does not exhuast the disadvantage faced by people of color in our society.<\/p>\n<p>In this light, I present to you three pictures, submitted by Muriel M.
