Crew Pink Toenails &#8220;Controversy&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last week we received ten requests* to discuss the furor over <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jcrew.com\/womens_feature\/Jennaspicks.jsp\" target=\"_blank\">a J. Crew ad<\/a> featuring a 5-year-old boy in pink toenails, with his mom, Jenna Lyons, the President and Creative Director of J. Crew.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/04\/131.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/04\/131.jpg\" width=\"376\" height=\"422\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/health\/2011\/04\/11\/j-crew-plants-seeds-gender-identity\/\" target=\"_blank\">Fox News<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mrc.org\/cmi\/articles\/2011\/JCREW_Pushes_Transgendered_Child_Propaganda_.html\" target=\"_blank\">Media Research Network Center<\/a> (MRNC), and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.onemillionmoms.com\/IssueDetail.asp?id=401\" target=\"_blank\">One Million Moms<\/a> criticized the ad for\u00a0supporting a liberal agenda aimed at mainstreaming gender-bending behavior and causing this particular child to be confused about his gender or sexual orientation. \u00a0Their criticism was picked up by\u00a0mainstream news outlets, including\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Health\/crew-ad-boy-painting-toenails-pink-stirs-transgender\/story?id=13358903\" target=\"_blank\">ABCNews<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.wsj.com\/juggle\/2011\/04\/13\/pink-is-the-new-blue-at-j-crew\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Wall Street Journal<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/newsroom.blogs.cnn.com\/2011\/04\/16\/j-crew-ad-stirs-controversy-with-pink-toenails\/\" target=\"_blank\">CNN<\/a>, and the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/latimesblogs.latimes.com\/alltherage\/2011\/04\/j-crew-and-jenna-lyons-pink-toenail-controversy.html\" target=\"_blank\">Los Angeles Times<\/a>, who mostly just posed the question as to whether they were correct, while balancing opposing views in support of the idea that painting a son&#8217;s toenails pink was consequence-less.<\/p>\n<p>Frankly, I&#8217;m not sure what to make of this &#8220;furor&#8221; (as I called it). \u00a0On the one hand, the criticism of the ad is a cautionary tale to all companies and a lesson to us all. \u00a0Here at SocImages, we frequently criticize companies that portray and assert rigid gender roles, especially for boys. \u00a0But look what happens when a company dares to do something different? \u00a0Outrage! \u00a0Accusations! Perhaps we&#8217;re short-sighted to imagine that companies can just tell whatever cultural story they want to tell.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, perhaps this isn&#8217;t a story about advertising, perhaps it&#8217;s a story about media more generally. \u00a0It&#8217;s true that there were objections to the ad. \u00a0But I didn&#8217;t find many of them; just a few high-profile examples. \u00a0Perhaps what really happened was what is sometimes colloquially referred to as a &#8220;slow news day.&#8221; \u00a0Only the choir would have been preached to if the criticisms weren&#8217;t picked up and highlighted by many more media outlets. \u00a0And those outlets, as I did above, beg audiences to pay attention to the &#8220;furor.&#8221; \u00a0A furor that might have been largely of their own making. \u00a0Say &#8220;hello&#8221; to ratings.<\/p>\n<p>These are my thoughts.
