To begin, he notes that Facebook, as just one example, doesn&#8217;t just allow, but <em>incites <\/em>disclosure by rewarding it, but only intermittently (a la <a href=\"http:\/\/genetics.biozentrum.uni-wuerzburg.de\/behavior\/\/learning\/SkinnerBox.html\" target=\"_blank\">B.F. Skinner and the Skinner box<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, parents try to protect children from disclosure and exposure with surveillance tools that block and report content. \u00a0This, Doctorow argues provocatively, only trains kids to accept surveillance as normal and unproblematic. \u00a0Instead of spying on our kids, he suggests, we should be teaching them to manipulate and avert involuntary disclosure, such that they grow up learning to question instead of accept the use and abuse of their personal information.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><object width=\"550\" height=\"390\" classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowScriptAccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/RAGjNe1YhMA&amp;hl=en_US&amp;feature=player_embedded&amp;version=3\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><\/object><\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
