{"id":34998,"date":"2011-04-11T10:01:54","date_gmt":"2011-04-11T15:01:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=34998"},"modified":"2013-11-11T03:39:28","modified_gmt":"2013-11-11T08:39:28","slug":"disney-princess-grapes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2011\/04\/11\/disney-princess-grapes\/","title":{"rendered":"Disney Princess Grapes?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ria sent along an example of something simultaneously routine and jarring. \u00a0Disney princess grapes:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/04\/19.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-35007\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/04\/19.jpg\" width=\"454\" height=\"338\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/04\/19.jpg 720w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/04\/19-500x372.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 454px) 100vw, 454px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Thinking out loud here: \u00a0By now, in the U.S., we&#8217;re used to thinking about food being branded with mascots, movie\/tv show characters, and even corporate entities. \u00a0When I posted about <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2010\/08\/08\/diet-food-for-kids\/\"><em>Cars<\/em>&#8211; and Disney princess-themed diet snack packs<\/a>, for example, it wasn&#8217;t the branding of food that interested me. \u00a0But there is something unfamiliar to me about the associating of grapes with Disney. \u00a0I think it has to do with the idea of processed versus &#8220;fresh&#8221; foods. \u00a0In this case, Disney is marking a (genetically-modified) natural product in its natural state. \u00a0This feels different than marking a brightly-colored, largely synthetic, already highly-branded foodstuff. \u00a0Can Disney really claim grapes? \u00a0Celery? \u00a0Red peppers? \u00a0 To me, these are the last things in the grocery store that actually feel as if they come straight from the farmer. \u00a0Now they&#8217;re taking a detour through the happiest place on earth?<\/p>\n<p>Ria links the new development in branding to the obesity panic and the push for kids to eat healthier food.
