In January a member of the Toronto Police force,\u00a0Const. Michael Sanguinetti,\u00a0suggested to students at York University that \u201cwomen should avoid dressing like sluts in order not to be victimized\u201d (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.excal.on.ca\/news\/dont-dress-like-a-slut-toronto-cop\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">source<\/a>). \u00a0In response, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slutwalktoronto.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SlutWalk<\/a> was born. \u00a0The SlutWalk, which strode just yesterday, was a march designed to draw attention to the way in which the term &#8220;slut&#8221; is used to stigmatize and invalidate women.<\/p>\n<p>As Leora Tanenbaum argues in <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.harpercollins.com\/books\/Slut-Leora-Tanenbaum\/?isbn=9780060957407\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Slut! Growing Up Female with a Bad Reputation<\/a><\/em>, the term is used to control all women, not just women who want to have sex, because it can be applied to girls and women regardless of their sexual activity (as any virgin with a slut reputation can tell you). \u00a0Young girls grow up using, and fearing, the slut label. \u00a0And that label continues to be used against them as adults, even when it comes to sexual assault, as the police officer&#8217;s comment makes clear.<\/p>\n<p>In an effort to bring attention to word and \u00a0its use as a mechanism of control girls, women and men of all sexual activity levels came together on Sunday,\u00a0re-claiming and diffusing the &#8220;slut&#8221; label.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
