Ben Buursma noticed an ad in an Indonesian newspaper celebrating International Women&#8217;s Day and marketing &#8220;Books to empower all women,&#8221; though it turns out what they empower women to do is &#8220;look into the minds of men&#8221; and &#8220;find, keep, and understand a man&#8221;:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/03\/empowerment.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-34306 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/03\/empowerment-500x407.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"407\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/03\/empowerment-500x407.jpg 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/03\/empowerment-110x90.jpg 110w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/03\/empowerment.jpg 615w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Emma M. H. sent in a link to the the White House Council on Women and Girls <a href=\"http:\/\/www.esa.doc.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/reports\/documents\/womeninamerica.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">report on the status and well-being of U.S. women<\/a> on a variety of social indicators. Interestingly, while both men and women are waiting longer to get married, the gender gap in age at first marriage has remained relatively constant for decades:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/03\/age.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-34300\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/03\/age-500x327.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"327\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/03\/age-500x327.jpg 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/03\/age.jpg 949w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Men are more likely to be either married and never-married, while women currently more likely than men to be divorced or widowed:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/03\/maritalstatus.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-2\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-34301 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/03\/maritalstatus-500x334.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"334\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/03\/maritalstatus-500x334.jpg 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/03\/maritalstatus.jpg 926w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Over time, the percent of women who have never given birth has gone up, particularly for the 25-29 age group, though in the last decade there has been a slight downward trend for women aged 30-44:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/03\/children.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-3\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-34302 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/03\/children-500x328.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"328\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/03\/children-500x328.jpg 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/03\/children.jpg 932w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>One note about that graph: the report uses the phrase &#8220;had a child&#8221; and &#8220;childbearing,&#8221; so I think this data would include women who have adopted children but never given birth.<\/p>\n<p>I was surprised to see that rates of Cesarean sections have gone up in the past decade:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/03\/csections.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-4\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-34305 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/03\/csections-500x323.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"323\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/03\/csections-500x323.jpg 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/03\/csections.jpg 946w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Women are now outperforming men in terms of educational attainment, earning the majority of bachelor&#8217;s degrees, though notice the number of degrees in engineering\/computer science earned by women hasn&#8217;t increased since 1998:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/03\/degrees.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-5\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-34303 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/03\/degrees-500x329.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"329\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/03\/degrees-500x329.jpg 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/03\/degrees.jpg 958w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>However, women still make less than men at each level of educational attainment:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/03\/earnings.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-6\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-34304 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/03\/earnings-500x328.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"328\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/03\/earnings-500x328.jpg 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/03\/earnings.jpg 928w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The report has lots more data on family life, work, education, health, crime, and so on.
