{"id":34223,"date":"2011-03-11T10:24:06","date_gmt":"2011-03-11T15:24:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=34223"},"modified":"2013-11-14T04:27:16","modified_gmt":"2013-11-14T09:27:16","slug":"demographics-of-the-non-religious","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2011\/03\/11\/demographics-of-the-non-religious\/","title":{"rendered":"Demographics of the Non-Religious"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Data from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.americanreligionsurvey-aris.org\/american_nones_the_profile_of_the_no_religion_population.html\" target=\"_blank\">the American Religious Identification Survey<\/a> (collected in 2008) reveals some interesting things about the population of Americans that do not identify with organized religions: atheists, agnostics, and the &#8220;spiritual but not religious.&#8221; \u00a0Most of the non-religious grew up with religious parents. \u00a0Only 17% report that neither of their parents identified with a religion:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/03\/6.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-34226\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/03\/6.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"185\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Being non-religious does not\u00a0correlate with income or education:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/03\/110.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-34227\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/03\/110.jpg\" width=\"486\" height=\"202\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Instead, it&#8217;s strongest correlation is with gender. \u00a0Women are more likely than men to believe in God, more likely to convert to a faith if raised as a non-believer, and less likely to leave a faith they are raised in.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/03\/21.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-2\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-34228\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/03\/21.jpg\" width=\"495\" height=\"183\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Younger people are also more likely to be non-religious:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/03\/3.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-3\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-34229\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/03\/3.jpg\" width=\"488\" height=\"183\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Americans with Irish ancestry make up a significant percentage of the non-religious.
