Anna sent in an image demonstrating just this, noting that the dog products at her vet are blue and the cat products pink:<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/02\/IMG00404-20110124-1807.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-33402\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/02\/IMG00404-20110124-1807.jpg\" width=\"310\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>More, and importantly, because we also tend to value men and masculinity over women and femininity, it is somehow &#8220;cool&#8221; to own a dog, especially a big dog. \u00a0This is true for both men and women. \u00a0But it isn&#8217;t really cool to own a cat. \u00a0We accept it in women because cats enhance her femininity (for better or worse), but when men do it. \u00a0Well, as I say in my previous post on the topic, &#8220;we think men with cats are a little femmy or, at minimum, sweeter than most\u2026 even, maybe, gay.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This was not lost on the folks at Much Love Animal Rescue. \u00a0Visiting the site, Squee noticed that they had <a href=\"http:\/\/www.muchlove.org\/2011\/02\/10\/its-okay-to-be-a-cat-guy-watch-some-realy-cat-guys\/\" target=\"_blank\">a page aimed at men<\/a> that attempted to convince them that owning a cat could be manly indeed. Their commercials feature extra-super-manly-men with grease &#8216;n stuff talking about punching things and loving their cat. This is nice in that it challenges the social construction that owning cats is feminine, but notice that it leaves intact the idea that men-should-be-men and avoid all things feminine.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/MZbzqUQ_n9g\" height=\"390\" width=\"500\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/UhVKeU60zlg\" height=\"390\" width=\"500\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
