{"id":3321,"date":"2008-10-12T13:06:51","date_gmt":"2008-10-12T18:06:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=3321"},"modified":"2010-11-24T02:16:17","modified_gmt":"2010-11-24T07:16:17","slug":"pink-mccainpalin-yard-sign","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/10\/12\/pink-mccainpalin-yard-sign\/","title":{"rendered":"Pink McCain\/Palin Yard Sign"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I just saw one of these signs in my neighbors&#8217; yard (image found <a href=\"http:\/\/www.goptrunk.com\/product-p\/ysr4054.htm\">here<\/a>):<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2008\/10\/ysr4054-2.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3320 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2008\/10\/ysr4054-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The reason it struck me is that a) I&#8217;m quite certain it&#8217;s the first time I&#8217;ve ever seen a pink campaign sign and b) it made me remember the criticisms of the Kerry\/Edwards yard signs from the 2004 campaign (see <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/01\/06\/fonts-and-power\/\">this post<\/a>). The Democratic candidates&#8217; signs were described as lacking confidence, whereas the Republicans&#8217; logo exuded masculinity and assertiveness, which supposedly reinforced stereotypes of Democrats as weak and uncertain and Republicans as aggressive and strong. It&#8217;s a sign of the many unexpected events of this campaign season that just four years later Republicans would feel comfortable putting out a pink yard sign because they&#8217;re actively playing up the femininity of one of the candidates. It&#8217;s not just that they&#8217;re emphasizing that she&#8217;s female; I&#8217;m pretty sure if Hillary Clinton had won the Democratic nomination, she wouldn&#8217;t have pink yard signs.
