{"id":32960,"date":"2011-02-04T10:07:26","date_gmt":"2011-02-04T15:07:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=32960"},"modified":"2013-11-07T17:16:22","modified_gmt":"2013-11-07T22:16:22","slug":"advertising-and-the-eskimo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2011\/02\/04\/advertising-and-the-eskimo\/","title":{"rendered":"Advertising and the Eskimo"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We&#8217;ve discussed <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/09\/22\/some-native-american-sports-mascots\/\" target=\"_self\">American Indian mascots<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2010\/08\/20\/warrior-up-more-appropriation-of-indigenous-cultures-in-advertising\/\" target=\"_self\">advertising featuring anachronistic caricatures of American Indians<\/a>, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2010\/01\/23\/russian-ice-skaters-impersonate-aboriginals-win-gold\/\" target=\"_self\">ice skater who appropriated aboriginal culture<\/a>, the lie at the heart of <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/06\/15\/crying-indian-anti-litter-psa-from-1970s\/\" target=\"_self\">the famous crying Indian PSA<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/12\/28\/on-avatar-the-movie-spoiler-alert\/\" target=\"_self\">the stunning irony that is <em>Avatar<\/em><\/a>, but we&#8217;ve never directly addressed the use and appropriation of the idea of the Eskimo. \u00a0The term refers to the Inuit and Yupik people in Eastern Russia, Alaska, Canada, and Greenland.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ric.edu\/faculty\/rpotter\/\" target=\"_blank\">Russell Potter<\/a>, a professor of English at Rhode Island College, collected a few <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ric.edu\/faculty\/rpotter\/eskad.html\" target=\"_blank\">vintage advertisements featuring the idea of the Eskimo<\/a>. \u00a0He argues that they fall roughly into two camps: cheerful adorable Eskimo and the Eskimo as primitive and backwards.<\/p>\n<p>These first two for apples and ginger ale fall into the first category:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/02\/1.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32965\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/02\/1.jpg\" width=\"426\" height=\"389\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/02\/2.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32966\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/02\/2.jpg\" width=\"416\" height=\"777\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/02\/2.jpg 416w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/02\/2-267x500.jpg 267w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 416px) 100vw, 416px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But this ad presents the &#8220;Esquimaux&#8221; as &#8220;dull&#8221; and Grape Nuts as civilized:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/02\/3.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-2\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32967\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/02\/3.jpg\" width=\"480\" height=\"730\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/02\/3.jpg 600w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/02\/3-328x500.jpg 328w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Building on Potter&#8217;s collection, Adrienne at <a href=\"http:\/\/nativeappropriations.blogspot.com\/2011\/02\/ubiquitous-eskimo.html\" target=\"_blank\">Native Appropriations<\/a> posted some more contemporary uses of the Eskimo.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.eskimojoes.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Eskimo Joe&#8217;s<\/a> (Stillwater, OK) uses an image of an Eskimo looking downright ridiculous and very much like his dog:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/02\/4.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-3\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32968\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/02\/4.jpg\" width=\"315\" height=\"315\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/02\/4.jpg 350w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/02\/4-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 315px) 100vw, 315px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Any child of the &#8217;80s probably remembers the Lisa Frank Eskimo girl (which Adrienne points out looks decidely anglo):<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/02\/51.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-4\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-32971\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/02\/51-792x1024.jpg\" width=\"380\" height=\"491\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/02\/51-792x1024.jpg 792w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/02\/51-386x500.jpg 386w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/02\/51.jpg 868w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 380px) 100vw, 380px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And this ad seems to suggest that even decapitated walruses speak better English than Eskimos:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/02\/6.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-5\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32970\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/02\/6.jpg\" width=\"422\" height=\"479\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/02\/6.jpg 704w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/02\/6-440x500.jpg 440w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 422px) 100vw, 422px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s another example of the childlike Eskimo, tweeted to us by <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Matthew_Kneale\/status\/397541166935052289\" target=\"_blank\">@Matthew_Kneale<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/02\/BYRZlcdCEAAibSQ.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-6\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-58162\" alt=\"BYRZlcdCEAAibSQ\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/02\/BYRZlcdCEAAibSQ-500x375.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/02\/BYRZlcdCEAAibSQ-500x375.jpg 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/02\/BYRZlcdCEAAibSQ.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<p>All of these ads turn Eskimos into (cute but inferior) childlike figures or (deficient and inferior) backwards adults, or some combination of the two. \u00a0For a population with essentially no contact with the Inuit or the Yupik, the idea that they are real human beings can become lost. \u00a0When real members of a group are invisible, imaginary representatives can be demonized or romanticized as we see fit.<\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
