The guidebook informs travelers of a particular type of local attraction: brothels. Of course, the information was for curiosity&#8217;s sake only:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Not that we imagine the reader will ever desire to visit these houses. Certainly not; he is, we do not doubt, a member of the Bible Society, a bright and shining light&#8230;But we point out the location of these places in order that the reader may know how to avoid them&#8230; (p. 6-7)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Certainly passages like this, from p. 13, make it clear that such establishments are to be avoided:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/01\/Image-1.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-32857 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/01\/Image-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"275\" height=\"276\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/01\/Image-1.jpg 275w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/01\/Image-1-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 275px) 100vw, 275px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It also included pages that were simply ads for particular brothels:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/01\/Image-2.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-32858 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/01\/Image-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"221\" height=\"123\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, the <em>NYT <\/em>checked the 1870 Census for the houses listed in the guide. In general, the women living there were described by Census workers as domestic servants or women who &#8220;kept house.&#8221; However, they found a few cases where the <a href=\"http:\/\/documents.nytimes.com\/1870-census-document\" target=\"_blank\">Census openly listed them as working at a &#8220;house of prostitution&#8221;<\/a> or &#8220;house of assignation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A doctor advertised &#8220;imported male safes,&#8221; i.e., condoms:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/01\/Image-3.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-2\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-32859 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/01\/Image-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"252\" height=\"121\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>His ad also describes an unspecified cure for women that may very well refer to abortions (at the time, products that caused abortion were often advertised as helping with menstrual regulation or any type of &#8220;menstrual stoppage&#8221;):<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/01\/Image-4.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-3\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-32860 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/01\/Image-4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"262\" height=\"44\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In addition to <a href=\"http:\/\/cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com\/2011\/01\/26\/on-the-records-a-well-preserved-roadmap-to-perdition\/?hp\" target=\"_blank\">an article about the directory<\/a>, the <em>NYT<\/em> put together a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2011\/01\/26\/nyregion\/gentleman.html\" target=\"_blank\">map showing the locations of the establishments<\/a> it mentions (which were a small proportion of all brothels in NYC, where prostitution was illegal but widely available at the time):<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/01\/districts.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-4\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-32856 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/01\/districts-467x1024.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"467\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/01\/districts-467x1024.png 467w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/01\/districts-228x500.png 228w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/01\/districts.png 630w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 467px) 100vw, 467px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The New York Times has made available a digital copy of The Gentleman&#8217;s Directory, a guide to New York City published in 1870.
