{"id":32668,"date":"2011-01-27T10:59:52","date_gmt":"2011-01-27T15:59:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=32668"},"modified":"2013-11-19T04:01:04","modified_gmt":"2013-11-19T09:01:04","slug":"race-and-pre-term-births","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2011\/01\/27\/race-and-pre-term-births\/","title":{"rendered":"Race and Pre-Term Births"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The CDC has just released\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/preview\/ind2011_su.html\">a Health Disparities and Inequalities Report<\/a> with new numbers detailing the uneven mortality and morbidity in the U.S. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/familyinequality.wordpress.com\/2011\/01\/15\/health-inequality-compendium\/\" target=\"_blank\">Family Inequality<\/a>&#8216;s Philip Cohen highlighted the data on pre-term birth among whites, blacks, Asians\/Pacific Islanders, Hispanics, and some Hispanic subgroups. \u00a0It&#8217;s nice to see data that includes more than just whites and blacks; studies often do not report data on Hispanics, Asian\/Pacific Islanders, and especially American Indians because the number of respondents is considered too low (and they do not over sample these groups). \u00a0More, breaking out the different Hispanic sub-groups is also rare. \u00a0As Cohen said, it&#8217;d be nice to see such detail for other groups as well (though it&#8217;s tough to do so for black Americans because those who arrived in the slave trade have often lost track of their national\/ethnic origin).<\/p>\n<p>In any case, the data both confirm previous findings and offer an important insight. \u00a0In the confirmatory case, it shows that Asians and whites are less likely to give birth to pre-term babies than other groups, with blacks suffering the worst outcomes. \u00a0As for the interesting finding: notice the wide range of outcomes for Hispanics of different origin. \u00a0Reporting only &#8220;All Hispanic&#8221; hides important variation.
