The December 2010 issue of <em>Elle<\/em> features Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, a major star in the Indian film industry who has also been a spokesperson for L&#8217;Oreal and appeared on the &#8220;Most Beautiful Women in the World&#8221; lists of various magazines. Here&#8217;s the cover, with a very pale Bachchan:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/01\/ellewhiteskin.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-32663 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/01\/ellewhiteskin.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"468\" height=\"621\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/01\/ellewhiteskin.jpg 468w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/01\/ellewhiteskin-376x500.jpg 376w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 468px) 100vw, 468px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s compare to other photo of Buchchan\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.psdisasters.com\/2011\/01\/elle-ivory-ivory.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/holly-bollynews.blogspot.com\/2010\/12\/aishwarya-rai-in-race-row.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Elle was criticized just a few months back for <a href=\"http:\/\/nymag.com\/daily\/fashion\/2010\/09\/elle_accused_of_lightening_gab_1.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">apparently lightening Gabourey Sidibe&#8217;s skin tone<\/a> on the cover as well. At that time, the editor said Sidibe wasn&#8217;t touched up any more or less than other women put on the cover. That may be true. But it leaves unanswered the question of why the women&#8217;s skin tone is considered insufficiently glamorous or beautiful as it is, and why making these stars&#8217; skin lighter would be seen as a clear improvement.<\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em>Gwen Sharp is an associate professor of sociology at Nevada State College.
