\nHope H. sent a link to Riese’s excellent discussion of Jessie J’s new music video at Autostraddle<\/a>. \u00a0Jessie J is already a superstar, writing songs for the likes of Justin Timberlake, Chris Brown, and Christina Aguilera. \u00a0But this is her first album where she writes for herself, and\u00a0Riese describes the video for the song “Do It Like a Dude” as infused with\u00a0\u201cfuck you i\u2019m fucking your face with my fucking song\u201d energy. \u00a0I can’t disagree.<\/p>\n

The song asserts it’s title, suggesting that Jessie J is as much a man as any man, as a sample of the lyrics shows:<\/p>\n

Boom Boom, pull me a beer<\/em>
\nNo pretty drinks, I\u2019m a guy out here<\/em>
\nRollin\u2019 rollin\u2019 rollin\u2019 rollin\u2019 money like a pimp<\/em>
\nMy B I T C H\u2019s on my d*ck like this<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Riese asks:<\/p>\n

…\u201cDo It Like a Dude\u201d is, on the surface, an anthem of independence \u2014 the only reaction Jessie J expects from your wannabe-boyfriend is his acknowledgment that lesbian sex doesn\u2019t need him. \u00a0But does singing that she can do \u201cit\u201d \u201clike a dude\u201d just play into the idea that a thing must be \u201cmale\u201d to be valid? Or can \u201cdude\u201d be a term independent of its ascribed meaning \u2014 is she… employing \u201cdude\u201d as an adjective encompassing \u201cmale\u201d traits like strength\/power\/aggression, freeing the term from its traditional application as a noun for \u201cperson with penis\u201d?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

That is, does valorizing masculinity in women liberate women? \u00a0Or would it be better to try to elevate femininity to match our admiration of masculinity? \u00a0And is it possible to liberate the word from its patriarchal trappings?<\/p>\n
