From a contemporary U.S. perspective, where most of us have heard homophobic jokes about not dropping the soap in the shower, two men showering together (even or especially in a military context) and using language like &#8220;hard&#8221; and\u00a0&#8220;get yourself in a lather&#8221; is undeniably a humorous reference to gay men.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I think, however, that this was not at all the intention in 1942, where the possibility of men&#8217;s sexual attraction to other men wasn&#8217;t so prominent of a cultural trope. \u00a0It simply wasn&#8217;t on people&#8217;s minds as it is today. \u00a0Accordingly, the ad seems to be a simple illustrated recommendation, complete with a nice heterosexual prize at the end.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/01\/1942_TSN_Lifebuoy.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32541\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/01\/1942_TSN_Lifebuoy.jpg\" width=\"531\" height=\"382\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/01\/1942_TSN_Lifebuoy.jpg 737w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/01\/1942_TSN_Lifebuoy-500x359.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 531px) 100vw, 531px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nFrom <a href=\"http:\/\/community.livejournal.com\/vintage_ads\/2401542.html\" target=\"_blank\">Vintage Ads<\/a>.<\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
