{"id":32504,"date":"2011-01-15T14:58:10","date_gmt":"2011-01-15T19:58:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=32504"},"modified":"2011-09-26T14:51:08","modified_gmt":"2011-09-26T19:51:08","slug":"vintage-images-of-african-americans","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2011\/01\/15\/vintage-images-of-african-americans\/","title":{"rendered":"Vintage Images of African Americans"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A while back Kale let us know that the New York Public Library had made their <a href=\"http:\/\/digital.nypl.org\/mmpco\/browse.cfm\" target=\"_blank\">images collection available online<\/a>.The collection has images on a huge array of topics, from fashion to the military to slavery to insects to a whole category for stilts, and including political cartoons, illustrations from publications, photographs, and so on.<\/p>\n<p>Kale found the collection particularly interesting as a way to look at historical racism and rhetoric about race relations in publications aimed at White readers. <a href=\"http:\/\/digital.nypl.org\/mmpco\/browseFTresults.cfm?&amp;trg=3&amp;strucID=584813&amp;dstart=1&amp;title=A%20Privilege%3F&amp;titleid=569720\" target=\"_blank\">This 1875 cartoon, titled &#8220;A Privilege?&#8221;<\/a>, presents segregation as actually <em>protecting<\/em> African Americans from the scourge of alcohol:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/01\/cartoon1.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-32505 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/01\/cartoon1-500x331.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"331\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/01\/cartoon1-500x331.jpg 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/01\/cartoon1.jpg 743w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Text:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A PRIVILEGE?<\/p>\n<p>Wife, &#8220;I wish you were not allowed in here.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It&#8217;s a fascinating example of the use of institutionalized racial inequalities that hurt African Americans to, instead, garner sympathy for White women and children and present African Americans as, really, better off.<\/p>\n<p>Another, <a href=\"http:\/\/digital.nypl.org\/mmpco\/browseFTresults.cfm?&amp;trg=3&amp;strucID=585358&amp;dstart=1&amp;title=Coontown%20Sketches.&amp;titleid=569720\" target=\"_blank\">published in <em>Life<\/em> in 1899<\/a>, implies African American men are burdens on their families, making their wives take on the role of providing for everyone:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/01\/cartoon7.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-32511 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/01\/cartoon7-500x412.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"412\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/01\/cartoon7-500x412.jpg 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/01\/cartoon7-110x90.jpg 110w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/01\/cartoon7.jpg 727w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Text:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Parson Featherly<\/em>: De Lawd hab took yo&#8217; husban&#8217; an&#8217; lef&#8217; yo&#8217; wid six chilluns; but &#8216;membah, Sistah, dat dar&#8217;s some good in all de Lawd does.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I does, Parson. I realizes dat dar&#8217;s one less for me to perwide foh.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This <a href=\"http:\/\/digital.nypl.org\/mmpco\/browseFTresults.cfm?&amp;trg=3&amp;strucID=585000&amp;dstart=1&amp;title=At%20The%20South.&amp;titleid=569720\" target=\"_blank\">1860 cartoon from <em>Harper&#8217;s Weekly<\/em><\/a> shows an African American woman (presumably a slave) in the South using the &#8220;Bobolitionists&#8221; &#8212; that is, abolitionists, who wanted to outlaw slavery &#8212; as a threat, a type of monster that will come steal him if he&#8217;s not good:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/01\/cartoon3.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-2\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-32507 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/01\/cartoon3-500x466.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"466\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/01\/cartoon3-500x466.jpg 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/01\/cartoon3.jpg 724w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Text:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Now den Julius!
